I built my first computer for my fiance about a year ago and up until now it has been running perfectly. Here are some of the specs:

2GB OCZ 800 mhz Ram
Intel E6400
250 GB Western Digital HD
P5NE-SLI Motherboard
320 mb 8800GTS
Windows Vista

I was in the middle of playing a game and the system froze. I tried to ctrl+alt+del but it remained unresponsive. I decided to try a hard restart and when it got back to the Windows loading screen the system froze again. I restarted again and I got the menu asking if I wanted to boot in safe mode. I was able to get into windows and I put the Vista DVD into the drive but I was unable to access it and the auto start was not functioning. I tried to restart again with the OS disk in the drive with the hopes that it would prompt me to reinstall Windows or repair it. The screen went blank and it was remained that way ever since. I have tried starting it again repeatedly but now I do not even hear the beep the motherboard used to make when it first started. Also the screen that shows the motherboard name and information doesn't show anymore. Basically I turn the computer on and the fans run and that is the only response I get from it. Nothing else happens.

When I built the computer my one fear was what would happen if something went wrong and I needed some technical support. If anyone can provide me with some information about what might be wrong with the system or some steps I can take to repair that would be amazing. Any help that you can provide is appreciated. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Sounds to me like your power supply died. If that is the problem, hopefully it didn't take anything else with it. Do you have another power supply that you can put in your problem system?

The only other desktop I have is an alienware. Considering that its still under warranty and it was a little pricey at the time I would rather not take the PS out of it to try it. Guess I'll head to the local store and pick up a new one and try that out tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Quality components like the ones you mentioned need a quality power supply. From yr description sounds like your power supply died. Be careful when a power supply dies it can take some things with it.

As Andon stated you need to start with your power supply.

Let us know how you make out with the new power supply.

How did it go? which brand/ size did you end up with?

(getting ready to buy a system soon - config will probably be Intel Q9450 and 9800gtx, so I'm looking for information)

....The fans are still working he said.. I would guess it is the motherboard from what you said there. First thing I would try though would be to take out your vid card and try using the onboard video. that at least rules out one problem. Another thing you can do it head down to Bestbuy (sorry for those of you who hate BB) and purchase a PSU. Bestbuy also will return the PSU within 30 days without any questions asked. Even if its not broken... Test the computer with the new powersupply and if it still isnt working, there is a good chance your motherboard is shot. If you need anymore help, feel free to PM me and I can help you further if you need it. (I do computer repair myself and have a good amount of knowledge on the topic.) If you do get it back up and running though, run DFT and memtest, both of which are free programs.
Best of luck to you!
