Looking to upgrade my sig rig. I really need 2 computers, or rather an upgrade and a file server. I am thinking of using my sig mobo/cpu to create the File Server.
I am currently using a mini ATX board with a raid card and 6 sata ports running windows home server connected to 10 1-2TB hdd's which is horrible! It just sorta turned into this...
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming, but mostly games like Civ 5, Ai Wars, Supreme Commander (not the shitty second one,) Photoshop, video and audio compression, as well as folding when I am not around. I also tend to run 2 or 3 vm's at the same time. I always have at least 1 VM open because I rarely web browse outside a VM.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Looking at around $2k shipped. I dont want to go over that, but am willing to if necessary to get a large benifit in performance.
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible. 4)

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
For the file server, I would like to be able to hold 20 ish drives. I currently have 15 1-2TB drives for it. They are SATA 2, not SCSI because those are tarded expensive. The file server doesnt have to be amazing. I just need it to hold computer backups and a shit ton of media I can stream across the network. As I said, I was thinking about using the mobo/cpu in my sig rig for this purpose, but it's not especially sell suited for it.
I currently have an AZZA 4000 case that is pretty much new and will take almost any board that could possibly be relevant to this build.
I have the water cooling setup in my sig rig, but would really like to replace the res and pump as I hate that it's taking up 2 5.25" bays and the pump is loud as hell.
I have the sig power supply, which is really bad ass and I think would be fine.
I am giving away one of my 470's, but will still have one, and still have a 285gtx oc I was thinking about using as a physics card. I really want a 680 and was debating on getting the hydro version, but was told it was better to get the normal one and your own water block. I would prefer to have a 1 video card solution (+physics card,) but am willing to go
to 2 if thats the best way. I really want to be able to run Linux on the machine, so lets please keep that in mind.
I have BR Burners and readers (3 in total) so I dont need any of those.
I would like to reuse my SSD because it's awesome.

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
3x 1920x1200 28" monitors. They are really kinda too big and I have been bouncing between 2 and 3 screens. I kinda like 2 better tbh.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
w/in 3 months, but can wait a bit longer if necessary.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
USB3 headers on the mobo is a requirement. All but 1 of the GD front panel usb's are usb 3 and my current mobo doesnt have the header which leaves me sucking...
I require at least 6 Sata ports, but thats pretty standard on any mobo these days.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
I have several copys of Windows 7, and a copy of Server 2008 and windows home server. available for use.
In the end, I was thinking of going to a 2011 socket with a 680, but am more than open to suggestions. Not really sure what the best aproach to the file server is.
