computer theft on college campuses

I'll be leaving for college next week and I want to bring this new expensive pc i built and I don't want to lose it. How much of a problem is computer theft on college campuses? I have a Lian Li v2000 which has this puny little hole for a lock as well, which i might lock a cable to the bed with, but that is no obstacle for an armed thief anyway...

I've never heard of anyone getting their computer stolen at either my college or my brother's. Generally you want to lock your room up, and even if you don't, a thief would have to have some major balls to walk into your room and walk out with a computer simply because there are so many people around to catch them in the act.

I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you keep your room locked. At Ohio Northern I would leave my room with the door open to walk down the hall to the bathroom. Sometimes I'd leave it open and walk all the way downstairs to the kitchen.

And between my roommate and I was tons of Logitech, including his Z-680s, and my MX Duo. Not to mention his Shuttle and my desktop, laptop, and router.

I don't know what it's like at your school. Try to make friends with the people living around you. Not just so they like you, but also so they know your room is your room, and would be alarmed if they saw someone else trying to get in.

I was afraid about my expensive computer I built getting stolen from my dorm room so I took out insurance on it. Was only 30-50 a years for a $1750 comp as long as you have all your receipts.
Companies that sell special dorm room insurance:
csiprotection.com
nssinc.com

Im not sure how great those are, I went threw my parents home insurance.

I wouldn't worry too much about your comp being stolen. Unless you live at a school that has a serious crime problem it will not be an issue for a few reasons. First desktops are hard to steal, they are more likely to steal laptops if anything. Second most people who are stealing stuff don't know a good computer from a bad one and everyone at college has a computer. Third, your room will most likely be locked when your not there.

The only time I've heard of anyone having stuff stolen is when they leave for winter/summer vacation and leave stuff behind (with their door unlocked). So long as that doesn't happen you should be fine.

You eat paint chips as a kid?

I figure this is where my Thermaltake Xaser III is going to shine. Since it has a very thick front door with a lock, and a lock behind that for the side panel, I feel pretty safe. Anyone stealing it is going to have to be able to a) pick locks, b) work some power tools, or c) ummmm steal my keys? If my computer gets stolen, I'll be happy knowing that they had to go through a ton of trouble just to even reach the power button. Unless of course the lock is ridulously easy to unlock. I once had a lockbox that I could unlock with a pair of scissors :(

i start college on friday of this week, and i was kind of worried about theft also. i share my room with 5 other people and as bad as it sounds you can't trust everyone. i will be bringing the shuttle in my sig, the laptop in my sig, and a bunch of other stuff, like my speakers, external hard drives, router/switch etc. what i did was buy a big plastic trunk with a master lock on it, so i can toss everything that is loose in there and lock it to my bed/desk/dresser when i leave for weekends or whatever; it is not the most secure thing in the world, but it is better than nothing.
another security measure you may want to take is writing down your mac address for your NIC. since most people have no idea about computers in college if they did steal one they would probably just go ahead and use it on the campus network. if you had your mac address written down somewhere safe you could get the network administrator to do a search for it on the network; as long as the thief does not know how to change the mac address, change the nic, or know about mac address spoofing ;)

I've never had anything stolen out of my room and I only lock my room at night. I don't even take my keys with me when I go to classes. Though anyone who looks in my room can't tell the dumpster diving junk from the good stuff anyway. :D My stupid fucking roommate(before he was my roommate) used to lock his door when he went to the fucking bathroom 10 feet away for 2 minutes. Though I go to a fairly small university in a pretty small town, and we get to know everyone in the dorm(on our floor at least). If you don't want something to get stolen then don't bring it to college. I'm not saying that if you bring it to college it will get stolen; it's just that there is always the possibility and if you don't want to take that chance then don't bring it.
