Built this computer in late 2013 and upgraded the video card a few weeks ago.

Full specs:
  • Intel Core i7 4770k
  • Asus Z87 Pro
  • Corsair Vengeance LP 16GB
  • EVGA GTX 970 FTW
  • Corsair RM650 PSU (650 watt)
  • Sandisk Extreme II 480GB SSD
  • Seagate 2TB Hybrid HDD
  • Corsair Hydro H90 CPU Cooler

Ran just the onboard video until a few weeks ago whenI upgraded to an EVGA GTX 970 FTW card.

I've played FSX and TF2 pretty much since then with no issues (several multi-hour gaming sessions). All of a sudden tonight within an hour I have had three random shut downs with a restart a few seconds later while playing TF2. All temps look good (will post the last temp log before it restarted in a bit). It sounds like a PSU issue but the fact that I haven't had any issues to date makes me think otherwise (unless its on its way out).

Any suggestions?

Do you happen to have a spare PSU laying around or possible can borrow someones? I know that a bad power supply has caused random restarts for me before after upgrading a graphics card. Since you just added the graphics card a few weeks ago and that has over doubled your total system peak power draw. It may have been a bad batch but since it wasn't stressed it has been doing fine. Before it should have been ~175-250w but now it should be more like ~325-400w. Has it happened while web surfing or only while gaming?

I don't have a spare one per say but I built a computer for my son at the same time and our specs are pretty similar - luckily I went with modular PSU's so it should be super easy to swap out.

I'd like to rule out software first. Is there a stress testing program that you could recommend that would simulate gaming? I usually use furmark for the GPU but I'd like something that outs a load on the CPU as well.

For the cpu I use prime 95 for a few hours when I overclock. Here is a link to a short write up about stress testing.http://www.pcworld.com/article/2028882/keep-it-stable-stupid-how-to-stress-test-your-pc-hardware.html Another option If you really think that it is software is to change the boot order on your motherboard to your 2TB hard drive. Install windows and then load up the game that's making it crash. Steam can actually find the game on your ssd as long as you tell it where to look. If it stays it has to be hardware related and you can change your SSD back to #1. If it goes away then you can go from there. My 1TB storage drive used to be my main drive until i got my 120GB SSD about 2 years ago and still have windows on it to this day.

Alright so I've spent the afternoon gaming without a restart so I think I figured it out.

- Started with TF2 and rebooted three times within a minute.

- Launched Furmark and after twenty minutes no reboot after ten minutes.

- Launched Prime 95 followed by Furmark with no reboot after five minutes.

- Launched FSX and flew for twenty minutes with no reboot.

- At this point I was confident that I ruled out a GPU/CPU issue. Figured it was time to try TF2 again before remembering that the other day I had GeForce Experience pop up 2-3 times about optimizing TF2 (don't recall if I played after though). Went into GeForce Experience and reset to default and allowed it to optimize again.

- Launched TF2 and played for an hour plus with no issues.

So something with the GeForce Experience program must have caused the issue (TF2 is the only game that it optimizes for) and by clearing the settings and reapplying, fixed it.

I would optimize it again and see if it crashes again. then send a bug report to nvidia about the problem.

Well it's acting up again.

The other night turned off and automatically restarted while playing TF2. Tried again and same thing.

Gave up and did some web browsing and it turned off again and rebooted.

Same thing last night.

I've now gotten a message a couple of times about power surge protection from an unstable power supply.

So I'm thinking it's likely the PSU and purchased a new PSU yesterday and will put it in tonight - I'll RMA the original PSU and likely sell it or keep it as a spare.
