Hey everyone,

I've searched the forum but was unable to find anything related to it. I plan to use my Yamaha RX-V367 receiver and connect it to a pair of Bose companion 2 speakers. (or something similar)

The reason I want to do this is because I want to also to connect my Yamaha sub to all of this for a better overall sound.

So here's my question...

Is it possible to connect the Bose Companion speakers to the audio output of my receiver. Connect my computer to one of the receiver's inputs and have it all work nicely together?

Also, will it make any difference in the overall sound quality if I plug my speakers into this receiver versus into my computer?

I apologize if this sounds like a newb question... any advice would be appreciated.

First, presuming you haven't gotten those Bose speakers yet, don't buy Bose unless you just need sound and need a very high WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). If you have them already, yes, they, the receiver, and your PC should play nice together. What I would advise you to do is find unpowered speakers in the $100 range instead. They will probably sound better than powered speakers in that range, especially since you already have an amp for them (the receiver).

It will not make much difference if you plug those Bose speakers into your computer or receiver, the sound quality will be largely the same. While the receiver almost certainly has a better DAC than the PC, those speakers are really nothing to write home about, and you might not notice any difference depending on the source (e.g., CDs versus FLACs, etc.).

Unfortunately, I don't pay much attention to the budget speaker market, so I don't any specific speaker recommendations for you.
 
even if you have a high WAF you could find some decent passive satellites for the cost of the Bose. passive speakers will allow you to control the crossover much easier.
what sub are you going to be using and what sound card do you have?

Running a sound card to a pre-out to low-fi powered speakers is just a recipe for a high noise floor...

And if you need something small, your local Best Buy will sell passive satellite speakers that are better than those Bose lol.
 
Since you have a receiver, head on over to Parts Express, and pick up a pair of the Dayton Bookshelves for $38. Yep, $38. They sound really, really good, and will blow away those Bose.

And they really are that good. Honestly, you'd have a hard time even finding any used bookshelf speakers that good for that price - or twice it! They only really lack in bass response (like any other small bookshelf), and you'll be covering that with a subwoofer anyway.

I got Infinity Primus 150s for $50 recently. $15 more though and used.
 
Yeah, check craigslist, audiogon, Polk audio forums, Chase Home theatre. All great places to pick up good used speakers. Otherwise, the parts express are ok for cheap. Certainly will take Bose and do horrible things to their posterior inputs.
 
The Insignias are good but not for $88+tax. They were awesome when we could get them for less than $50.
 
I see... well are the insignias comparable to the Dayton ones? If so, I may as well just get those then :) I just prefer to get them in store so if I have any trouble I can take them back. Speakers can be a finicky thing.
 
Thanks for the tips 450. One last newb question... Those pioneers appear to be worse than the insignias? I was comparing the specs, they have less power and less impedance. However, they have a higher frequency response and made of a different material. Would you say the Pioneers are a step above the Insignias and worth the extra 20 bucks?
 
I take that back... those speakers do not have a sub in them so that would explain the difference in power output most likely.
 
First off, passive speakers do not have power. They have power handling specs, and it is usually ok to be on the high side or even over-power them, as long as you dont try to fill a stadium with the sound!

The Pioneers are pretty highly rated also, as are all of the other suggestions.

Specs don't matter too much. Less impedance doesn't mean a speaker is worse.

I think the Pioneers are worth the money. Listen to both first. Since you have a sub, the low end isn't too important.
 
From what I've heard the Pioneers are better than the Insignias.

The Insignias were also much cheaper once upon a time.

About a year ago you could get them on cowboom (best buy outlet) for $44 shipped!
 
Ya... like I said... I'm not an audiophile by any means. I'm only making assumptions as to why one would be better than another. I have no doubt the Daytons are good... I want something that is going to a step above those and I'm willing to pay for it.

After much deliberation... I decided to get the Pioneers and they sound pretty darn good.
