Computer shutting down

Hello all I have an older Q6600 2.4ghz machine with 8 gigs of Ram running Win 7 64 bit. As of late when I start up my machine the video drivers crash and after a few min of working the entire computer shuts down (as if someone pulled the power cable) Video Card is a Radeon 6800 series (all drivers are updated)

Do you guys think this is a faulty PSU?

that would be what I look at first. psu probably has blown capacitors.

No warranty so pop the to and check. Unplug the cord and hit the power button a couple times to discharge the caps and take the to off. Look for blown caps. I actually just did this the other day for a client with the exact same hardware. Put in a cx450m.

It's possible, but before doing all that can you check the Windows Event log? It will narrow down on why it shut down. If it is indeed the PSU then it'll say something like "possible interrupted power" or something similar.

Found the problem. Fan on the video card stopped working. It must be over heating and shutting the computer down.

PSU looks fine no signs of anything burnt.

Now what do I replace this old card with? I'm on my phone now and need a suitable replacement asap as i use my cpu for school and work. Old card is a

Radeon HD 6850 PCI express 2.1 bus 1 gig of ram. Recommendations would be
Appreciated

Well since you aren't gaming and I don't know your budget something like a Geforce GT 730 will handle 1080P desktop duties and wont break the bank at ~$75. Some are even fanless so no need to worry about a fan failing on you again.

Oh. 750 Ti would be a good GPU and cheap. Around $115.

Or, if you have some spare parts laying around, just slap a different fan on it and call it a day! At least for now.

Which one of these do you recommend

You wont notice much of a difference between the different versions. I had an EVGA one that I sold a while back that powered my HTPC.

keep in mind for about 80 bucks more and about 3 weeks the new upcoming amd rx480's will give about 300% more performance with exact same power draw.....rig up a fan from somewhere to hold you over till then. borrow one of your case fan if need be lol...if you plan on using that 6600 for eternity then maybe it dont matter.
