Computer shorting out? Or something else?

Last year, I built a system for a family. They left this system in a closet for a year, and yesterday, they wanted me to set it up for them. So, I turned it on...and it would just freeze on the boot screen (it's a BioStar motherboard, and it freezes on the BioStar screen). I thought it was the memory, and I took it out and all of a sudden, I heard pops and cracks (like static electricity). When I gave them the computer, it worked perfectly (I installed a bunch of software on it like Firefox, Ad-aware, etc.)

So, what's the problem?
 
Please tell me you cleaned out any spiders and bugs that may have taken up residence in that year before you fired it up....

Yes, I did. I didn't say that because I figured it would've been obvious...
 
My guess would be the power supply shorted on something, everything else wouldn't have been that loud (i've blow a few motherboards and cards over the years). Possibly some bug in there, but hard to tell really.

Try pulling everything from the case and breaking it down to the bare minimums, mobo, proc, ram, vid card and harddrive. Get another power supply, try booting with that. Basically, just eliminate parts one by one though, at this point, it's probably fried completly.

Yea, but if it's fried (the PSU, which I'm assuming you're talking about...) wouldn't the system NOT turn on?
 
First thing I'd check would be the PSU. Assuming that you put in a decent one, you'll be able to check if the fuse popped. If it didn't, then it's unlikely that the PSU serious overvolted itself, though it may still be responsible for the damage to your computer.
