Computer restarts for no reason

Hello, I am not really sure which topic to ask this in because I don't really even know where my problem lies in. My computer keeps randomly restarting on itself for no reason. I tried to research this on the internet but only came up with other people getting error messages when it restarts. Mine restarts thre proper way, as if I did it myself through the start menu and has no error message. I just reformated my computer and this started to happen. It has never happened before for the 3 years I have had my VPR Matrix that I bought at Best Buy. The specs for my computer are as follows:

Intel P4 1.8 Ghz
Intel D845PT Motherboard
Samsung PC2100 512 MB Ram
Western Digital 80 Gig Hard Drive
Hitachi 160 Gig Hard Drive
DVD-ROM Drive
CDRW Drive

I really need help and do not want to reformat again. I APPRECIATE ANY HELP VERY MUCH!!! Thank you in advance.

sounds to me like you may have more then 1 issue going on here....

first off..check to make sure you are not overheating anything...that could be the issue or you may have a bad install of your OS...or you may have a virus giving remote control(or a command t shut down the system)
 
My friend... sounds like you have a virus.

Use one of the many MANY tools out there to rid yourself. I personally like AVG (here) it does the trick.

If you can't install it, or it doesn't run, try an online virus checker (here) and that could help ya out.

You might need a total re-install of windows, but if you are using an early version of XP, you have to be sure to one of a few things:

1) do NOT connect to the internet while it is installing
2) do NOT update before you install a software firewall (here) **OR**
3) download (and install... big download here) Windows SP2 before you connect to the internet **OR**
4) (and this is recommended to the non-tech people) get a router/firewall from a reputable company (like Linksys, etc.)

I hope this helps. The main reason this shit keeps happening is people get infected don't know (or the virus keeps them from being able to get rid of it) and when they re-install windows, the get re-infected (and infect others) within a few minutes of connecting to the internet on high speed if they are not properly protected.

Thank you for your replies, I did a virus scan with AVG and it found one file that had a virus, but it was only a temporary internet file....so I moved it to the virus chest. I already have Zone Alarm Firewall Pro Edition. Any other idas? I really do not want to backup all my files again and reinstall windows.

if not a virus, could possibly be the ram? have you another ram stick you could test the system with for a while? also running memtest would help to test the ram

Whats the temperature readings? if it was fine for 3 years it would seem odd that the temps would suddenly cause these problems, but you'll want to cover every possibility and overheating is a prime suspect for system freezing and random reboots.
