ok, so here's what's goin on: my computer is restarting like crazy. it started a few days ago and has gotten worse. reboots anywhere from before the logon screen to 15 minutes later after listening to music only. I have done the following to troubleshoot:

memtest- ran fine, no errors
temps are good: 38C
updated drivers, etc
switched ram locations
checked PSU, all good
moved RAID card from one PCI slot to another
booted into Knoppix and SuSE, where they both had programs close at random and restart as well
disabled my audigy sound card (sound was being very screechy right before restarts)

i'm running xp pro, need any other info? suggestions?

thanks

what did you use to check the PSU?
and how long did you run Memtest?

you can always turn off automatic restart in system properties (advance tab -> startup and recovery)

See what happens

I used MBM to check out my voltages and they were stuck where they should be. It's a 460W enermax, and the +12V rail is 33A. I don't have that many things in my computer. I ran memtest for 8 hours.

I'll try the not automatically restarting thing and see how that goes. Thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming!

sounds like you have a decent PSU, but software is pretty useless for monitoring voltages
and run Memtest for 24 hours

Yeah, I don't have a voltmeter laying around for testing my psu.

I could leave memtest running for that long...would that really make a difference? I thought overnight would have been enough, but I could be wrong.

i tried disabling the auto-restart and so far no restarts but now my sound is really choppy and squeeky. I guess it's better than restarts, but it still isn't totally fixed. i have the latest drivers for my soundcard and everythin. more ideas?

alright i just got a crash blue screen thing after maybe trying to do to much (testing it out):

technical info:

*** STOP: 0x00000023 (0x000E00E, 0xF89C49B0, 0xF89C46B0, 0x8055296D)

does that mean it is RAM and it just wasn't caught in the 8 hours of memtest?

If Memtest ran for 8 hours without crashing then its not memory.

I would start checking hardware not used Memtest.
Download a hard drive checker and test them.
Remove any card/drive not needed to boot into Windozes, ie. sound, nic, optical drives, etc, etc.
Are you more stable ?

You could even try removing the XP harddives and then installing XP on a spare drive.

Luck............. :D

would you have any suggestions for hard drive checkers? i've run things like hdtach and scandisk and haven't gotten any errors or restarts...but now blue screen's are showing up more. i've gotten some errors i think dealing with my video and sound card. i've tried updating to the latest drivers for each but still have problems.

I'll try taking the sound card out and see if that helps.

Go to your hard drive makers home page.
From there you should be able to find a good disk checker diagnostic program.

booted into Knoppix and SuSE, where they both had programs close at random and restart as well
Did you boot from your hard drive or CD drive ?

Do you get the same BSOD everytime or are they different ?

luck........... :D

thanks for the HD software suggestion. I'll try that out now.

As for the BSOD's, they've been different, which is really confusing me. sometimes it's just memory addresses (i think) other times it lists a file, such as:

ati3duag.dll
drwtsn32.exe
NDIS.sys
ati2cqag.dll
win32k.sys

So, not really sure about those. None of them have showed up on the same screen, it's always just been one.

As for the knoppix, i booted it off a CD, and the SuSE was a livecd as well.
