computer restarting after radeon 9600se installed

Well, the subject says it all. I managed to successfully take out my GeForce 2 64mb card, and install a Radeon 9600SE card. I deleted all the nVidia drivers, and installed all of the ATI drivers.

The problem begins when I try to load a 'newer' game. Most games restart my computer instantly. Even the screen savers that came on the ATI CD restart it. The icons on my desktop are constantly refreshing (not ALWAYS but a lot at the beginning and if I highlight).

I ran DxDiag and tested DirectDraw. It ran perfectly fine, and passed. Then I ran Direct3D, and it restarted my computer.

When I first got it installed, I -did- go in and fool with some settings that I thought were necessary. But since then, I've gone back and fixed them all, and still nothing.

ANY help is GREATLY appreciated. I really want this card to work; I don't want to have to take it back.

uninstall your 9600se then, start into safe mode then run driver cleaner. you can download that from majorgeeks.com

after you run it reinstall your new cards drivers. See if that fixes it.

Okay. When you said uninstall the 9600se, did you mean the drivers or the card itself? So should I completely reinstall everything, or just the drivers? The card works fine, really.. I fixed the problem with the icons refreshing by turning down the hardware acceleration. The only time it messes up is when I'm trying to run a game.

Go into control panel, right click on the card under display, then click uninstall.

Okay. I've completely reinstalled everything for it, besides taking the card out and putting it back in. Still, nothing. It restarts whenever a 'good' game is loaded.

Games such as Day of Defeat, and Jedi Academy work. Games such as Painkiller, and Splinter Cell do not.

i used to have that problem with my 9800pro. it turns out... my generic 350w psu is not giving enough juice. what are your system specs?

Are those games dx9 or open gl? One might work, and the other might not. Have you tried different drivers than the 4.4?

edit: do you have dx9b? You might try reinstalling it, since you went from a dx7 card to a dx9 card...

Jedi Academy and Day of Defeat are both OpenGL (I believe). I've reinstalled DirectX 9.0b three times.

I'm afraid it might be my power supply, also. I'm going to call ATI tomorrow, and if they can't help, I'll order a new PSU. Although I have no idea how to do that.. Or how to install the wires.. Or anything like that. I might take it to the computer store.

that could be your best bet, i would take the card to a local pc store. Tell them whats wrong and ask them to test it before you buy anything else.

They may charge you a couple bucks, but if thats the only option then thats the only option.

It actually sounds like a bad card. Although it could be a lot of things.

Okay..

I found out the PSU I have is only 200 watt. It's an ATX-1956D. It has an 'almost impossible to find' 3 pin connector.. I have no idea what that means.

So.. How much would a larger watt PSU cost me? Should I get a -specific- one? And what about the 3 pin connector?

Get an Antec or Enermax. Don't tuch the noname $20 ones. A good PSU will cost you $50+. I just got a 550W antec total control for $101 from newegg.com. I got it because it has fan only connecters/controler.
My bro just got a Enermax noisetaker 420W for $77 yesterday because his system wasn't getting into windows after he installed a new DFI mobo and like 10 fans. His 12v rail was 10v in bios with his crapy old sprikle 400W

just get like an antec smart 400 or a true 380.
should be more than enough for your system, but if you wanna keep the psu through many upgrades, look into getting a 430+ antec truepower.
