This is a friends computer. He just got an i5 2500k and gigabyte mobo with 8gigs of ram and a force gt 60gig SSD. His power supply is about 4 yrs old and its a thermaltake 500W with 15A on each rail.

The only time this thing will work (barely) is if i unplug the video card (ati 5770)and use onboard and unplug all the other hard drives cept the boot one.

Everything is brand new cept the power supply of course. Also only 1 12v plug is plugged in. power supply only has 1.

Download HirenBootCD http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/ burn to cd, boot os from it and run memtest86 (on stock settings) wait until 2 passes will go. if any error occour rma ram or return to the store. Have you got multimeter ? Maybe That psu is too old and voltages aren't good - if you have - check 5v, 12V and 3.3v line . If not - try with some other psu and connect to that pc.The best option would be if you would go to him with your memory and your psu. Apart from that considering that you said - the most probably is that that psu is too weak and too old.
