Computer Randomly Turns Off

Alright the problem is my computer randomly turns off. It's doing it with my 60gig wd hard drive, and my 120gig maxtor hard drive now.

Right now I can't even get the OS installed without it turning off.

The wierd thing is when it turns off, when I turn it on again, it does't do anything. After I turn it on and it does nothing, I turn it back off, and back on. When I turn it on the second time it runs.

It goes like this EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hardware:

512 geil pc3200 ram
Asus a7v8x motherboard
radeon 9700pro
athlon 2400+
gtxp 5.1


any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE:
So far I've tried the fallowing:
1. Different Power Supply
2. Updating Bios
3. Different Jumper Settings (master and cable select)
4. Different IDE Cables
5. Cleaned Proc/heatsink added new arctic silver and reseated.
6. Swapped the 9700 pro for a ti4400


UPDATE: It was the processor. It seems to be running really hot. I have an SLK Heatsink on it with a fan, and it's no overclocked at all. Any ideas on this or do I need to get a new mobo

Not really, I replaced the maxtor with the WD and now it restarts randomly. Jumper is on cable select. It's Master IDE1
 
Hard drive might be bad.

Will it reboot if you stay in your bios?

Is the WD drive the only one on the eide cable? If so its usually best to remove the jumper from the drive for single operation.

Download some WD utilities from their site to check the drive.

When your computer reboots does the hard drive spin down?

Actually what I meant to say was it does this with ANY western digital hard drive :confused: very strange.....

I'm updating the bios right now.....the one it's currently running is from 2002... it'd be nice if that fixed the problem.

UPDATE: Updating the bios didn't fix the problem :mad:

UDATE 2: Taking the jumper completely out does nothing

"Turbolink 420w max switching power supply" .... it came with the case.

Could the offbrand power supply somehoe have an effect?
 
PS could be iffy...

I had a similar problem with a motherboard, it would stay on fine, but every time I turned it off, I would turn it back on and get no video, kill switch once and back on and then it boots fine.

hmm thanks for the info. I'll try swapping out power supplies and see what happens.

UPDATE: damnit.....I swapped out the power supply for an Antec 350w and it's still turning off. :mad: :mad: :mad:
 
I'm experiencing similar problems and I suspect it may be one of three possibilities

Graphics Card
Northbridge overheating
Dodgy Proc

I recently changed heatsink, may have not cleaned proc off enough before installing it.

Changed my graphics card and northbridge fans for passive heatsinks, so these may not be getting cooled enough.

I'm gonna try some swapping about this weekend and see if I can isolate the problem.

That reminds me of another thing I did. I did reseat the heatsink and I cleaned off the proc/heatsink. Put some more arctic silver on there.

UDPATE: Just swapped video cards that wans't it either.

Overheating??? You might want to run Mem86 and see if is your memory. Maybe something shorting out???
 
Ironically I came here today to find a soloution to MY problem --my PC reboots randomly.

I intend to try a differant PSU tonight. I was running Win2k3 Server, and I formatted and put on 2k Server in hopes that it was the OS. It's NOT the OS. (Win2k AS reboots randomly just like Win2k3 AS did).

My reboots occur like once every 8 or so hours.

VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!

No, try another heatsink if you can also what thermal compound you using?

Arctic Silver (said that already), and I've tried it on an SLK-800 and a nice thermaltake heatsink

The SLK-800 should be a little overkill for a non oced 2400+....

Yeah. The thing is I think the proc is still working maybe since it works until it does something processor heavy......I think it might be the motherboard that's making it run hot. I put a 1700+ in there from my other computer and it made that run WAY WAY hotter than it is in it's normal mobo...

Have you tried blowing out the fans, and getting rid of the dust that lines the insides of the case? My computer was doing the same thing, and that fixed it.

hmm can you check/compare the temps you're getting in the BIOS or via motherboard monitor?
You may not want to risk another proc if the mobo is doing this tho'

Yeah I blew everything out today with the air compressor. I did that when I thought maybe there were some bugs crawling around shorting out the mobo once in a while :p ....

Yeah on the possibly bjorked mobo the processors are running in the high 60's (celsius). Whereas in the high 40's/low 50's depending on which proc on the other mobo...
 
Could a motherboard be causing a heat issue? 60C with no OCing is really high.
 
Try lowering the voltage on the cpu (make sure it's right) AMD's should be at 1.6-1.65v stock.

Yeah, it's at 1.65v right now. Is there a way i could turn the voltage down and up something else to keep it at the same speed?
