Ive been looking around the forums and through some Google pages but I cant find any pics of people set up with a personal projector dedicated to their computer. We were given a projector by one of my uncles but my dad doesnt use it cause we have a regular big screen.

Basically I was trying to figure a way out to jimmy rig the projector to my computer so i came up with this simple design...over the summer I want to perfect it but if anyone has any good ideas please share...

Just curious for those that do have projectors how good are they for gaming, I would imagine not that great but hey if it works then i just may use it for movies or whatever.

Do you mean A LCD projector like buisnesses use for powerpoint? Or A bigscreen TV? I've hooked up an epson powerlite 53c to my rig (at school) and it is REALLY cool to do. UT2k3 on a 25ft wide screen :D Granted they can't run the high res (neither can my vid card.) But you can get them for under $1000 if you know where to look.
 
I played Devil May Cry on it once at my school and it was amazing... Really brings out the poor res of the ps2 though.
 
Projectors are known for being bad in games for very bad refresh rates as I understand it. It seems to me like any projector cheap enough to not even have a VGA connector probably would just suck for gaming. I could easily be wrong though. I've never seen one used for anything that could use more than 2 or 3 fps except for one exception in my school where they had what seemed to me to be an incredibly expensive one where the teacher played a video on via rca jacks (which means 29.97 fps, but that's fine for gaming really.)

Anyway, you said you came up with some way to rig it up to the computer, what did you do? Use the s-video/composite output of a video card with one or some kind of vga converter?
 
I went to a friend's house and used S-Video for his projector and we played UT2004. We started at 7PM and fell asleep at 9AM. Greatest thing ever...it did occasionaly stall for some odd reasons. It's still fun as hell.

Another good thing to play on it, Super Smash Brothers, trust me.

Edit: His projector cost him over 3k though. It's a kickass Sony, so I'm not sure if you'll get the same results.
 
i thought about this several years ago and started following the projector market . unfortunately, at this time price is still the limiting factor. a quality UXGA projector(1600 x 1200 resolution) capable of sustaining digital input neccesary for gaming still runs around $6000. of course this is a 25 foot diagonal picture, but ya that would be sweet. other systems might be capable with a lower res like 1024 x 768 and around a $2000 price tag. GL with your mod, if it works u can make some big money.

you MUST be joking, because I've personally played CoD on a projector at 1280x1024, full detail, with perfectly fine framerates. Why would a projector (which supports a refresh rate from 60-75Hz) be any different than any other LCD?

yes, it looks totally sweet, yes, you should do it NOW.

Wrong question. The correct question is why would it be similar... A LCD and projector have no relation whatsoever... In fact, if anything a projector is more similar to a giant CRT than a LCD... Anyway, all I was saying was what I heard. Most probably the person who said that had a VERY cheap one though based on what people are saying here.

Anyway, that kind of thing would be neat to see at least. Heh, if you were living in a room like mine it wouldn't even occur to you to try that ^_^

Huh? They make LCD Projectors, which is a small LCD inside the projector and is where the image projected from, but they usally run native in 800 x 600. We use the at the college I go to, and I've played videos games on them its pretty nice.

n...ooo....most of those really small "office projectors" have a tiny LCD screen in then that displays the image, light shines through it and is projected.

CRTs are a completely different technology, basically an electron gun shoots out electrons, which are "aimed" by magnetic fields and strike different color phosphors on the front of the screen to make the image.
 
well i just looked it up the model number (NEC MT1030) and apparently its a $10,000 Projector :eek:

But it has two VGA inputs and even an output..S-video..and RCA video. Right now i only have access to my parents computer until i go back to school next week so im just gonna test it out on counterstrike or something and maybe a few DVDs.

I'll try and get some pics of my setup tomorrow.

I suggest that you browse through AVS Forum (specifically, the Projectors forum) before connecting the projector to your computer. High-end video output devices can be very sensitive to refresh rates and can be damaged by improperly synched video signals. Do some homework and find out the acceptable resolutions and refresh rates of the projector first. AVS Forum has many experts there that can suggest the best setup for your projector. If I recall correctly, there are quite a few fans of NEC projectors there.
