A freind of mine said the power at his house went out, and when it came back only his PC monitor would work. Do you think his mobo fried? He said he's using a very old surge protector.

If the moniter is on the surge strip with the pc.. and the moniter turns on.. then the outlet must work.

To know whats wrong you really need to just go over there and trobuleshoot the machene. I mean, saying the motherbord is dead is really a shot in the dark when you havent done a thing to try and single out the problem.
 
sometimes one of the plugs on the power strip can go bad. its happened to me bfore, its worth a shot
