Computer power/posting/spontaneously shutting off problems

Hello,

I've enjoyed my Shuttle SN25P for a few years now, but one day the computer just spontaneously shut off. Now, when I try to power it on, one of three things happens:

1) Nothing powers on whatsoever.
2) The computer powers on, with fans full blast (faster than normal), but the computer doesn't post.
3) Computer powers on, boots up normally. I get into Windows but the computer spontaneously shuts off in a few minutes. If I try to turn it back on, the cycle usually repeats itself. Nothing will turn on -- after 10 minutes, I get #2, then after an hour of letting it sit, it will get into Windows then shut off again.

I don't know much about computers, but I figure the problem may lie in the power supply. How else could the computer actually boot up into Windows successfully if it were some other problem? When I plug in the PC, I hear light whizzing/sparky noises coming from the PSU. I took a couple videos. I hope you can hear the noises:

Sorry for the darkness in the second one... the noise is all that's important though I guess.

I ordered a new PSU from Shuttle, so hopefully that will fix the problem. Any other ideas though, if that doesn't end up working? I guess it could be a heat problem, but the fans sound normal. When it does boot up into Windows, I have about 3 minutes before it turns off. In those three minutes I managed to run Speedfan, and the "remote" reading approaches 50C before it turns off. Not sure if that reading is correct or not... could that be the issue? Note though that I leave the computer off overnight, and in the morning sometimes it still won't power on at all... so how could it be a heat issue then?

It's pretty hard to tell if the noise is background noise or your PSU, but if I'm hearing what I think I am, that PSU is done. And regardless, any noise from a PSU is something I personally consider a bad thing.

I would wait until you get your replacement before trying to boot it again. Get the new one installed and report back here and let us know what happens....

Put in the new power supply and it works. I don't know much about electricity, but I think I overloaded the outlet the computer is plugged in to. The computer started giving me the problems the day I plugged in a cell phone charging station thing into the power strip. I'm not sure if that could destroy a PSU, but I'll be more cautious in the future I guess.
