Computer POSTs...sometimes?

I have been working on a computer for the last couple weeks now. When I first got it, I put it all together and everything seemed to be working just fine. The only problem with the machine was that every once in awhile, the system would not POST due to a loose wire of some sort. A couple days after building the computer I accidently ran some ASUS NoS program which crashed my system and would keep my systeming from POSTing. I determined that this program killed my motherboard so I RMA'd the motherboard back to ASUS. I just now, yesterday, received the new motherboard in the mail. I have only hooked up the essential computer parts into the motherboard (RAM, video card, processor) just to be sure it would work. I turn on the computer and everything works fine, the computer POSTs and I am now looking at the startup screen and I can fool around in BIOS, whatever. Now, when I turn the computer off and then turn it back on. The system will not POST. I get nothing on the monitor, cant get to BIOS, I get nothing. Every so often when I fool around with the RAM, I can get the computer to POST. Whenever it does POST, and work perfectly, the second I turn the computer off and turn it back on again (without touching anything inside) the computer again, will not POST. Basically, my problem is I have a computer that POSTs and works perfectly once in a blue moon. The computer just does not want to POST all the time, only when it feels like it. What do you think the problem might be? What do you think I could do to fix it? Whats wrong with my computer?

Im having a similar problem w/ a system Im building for my mother. Everything works fine, but when I turn it off, it usually doesn't POST until I turn on/off the PSU a few times, then its back to working fine. I can't help but think its a bad wire, a short, or a component that isn't sitting right, but Im not sure how to test and figure it out.

Usually if you're in the bios, and you reboot, and it won't post, you have a problem, it normally leads to a bad setting you made. A timing to high, etc. I'm assuming for both of you this is the case? No OCing yet? Just trying to get a basic setup to post?

I havent over clocked anything on this new motherboard, when i say i was in BIOS, i was just giving that as an example that I could get into windows ect ect. I did not change anything in the BIOS settings or anything like that.

Although, overclocking the first time is what i believe messed up my old motherboard (RMA'd it for the one i am using now) Could it be possible that the over clocking messed up another part that is only making my computer work half the time?

Oh ok, so you are saying any attempt at a warm boot and you get no post at all?
And by wiggling the ram you can get it to post?
Have you tried a different ram slot?

Not quite.. listen. I have the RAM in. The computer will POST perfectly. I then will turn off the computer and instantly restart it and i get no POST. I have tryed putting the RAM in all the slots atleast 20 times. Sometimes, once every hour I would say it will POST. Once I restart again, no POST for another hour. Its really strange...

So, it seems your system will not warm-boot, but it will cold-boot.

It might be possible you just got another bad board. I'd RMA it one more time.

If it is a bad board, it will POST sometimes but not all the time? I thought a board would just POST or not POST. Nothing in between. Sometimes when the pieces are cold, the computer still wont POST. Well, I guess im going to have to RMA it back again. Could it be possible that when the first time the motherboard died on me it damaged some of the other parts? Like RAM and processor?

Edit:

Just after I made the post I went over to the computer, turned it on and got no POST. I then moved the RAM into the 2nd slot, no POST, then moved it to the 3rd slot, no POST... But when i put it into the 4th spot i finally got the computer to POST. Right when it POSTed I turned off the computer and then turned it back on again to see if it would POST, and it did not. This is what has been going on with the computer since I got the new motherboard from ASUS (RMA).

I would agree it may be a bad mobo. Could be a cap issue, or even a resistor problem, almost sounds like it needs to drain charge fore it will fire again. All your other parts are the same i'm assuming, so it must be the mobo.

cap issue, resistor problem? what do you mean exactly, and how can i possibly check?

Papa is correct, but it could even be an issue with the fluid inside you can't detect by looking at it. I would RMA to be safe.

Satz and I are RL friends, building the comp together, but I had a few questions cause I am going to just pick up a new mobo at frys today instead of waiting another week and a half for RMA (im impatient, was suppose to be built about 3 weeks ago :( ), is there any chance its the ram? vid card? CPU? PSU? We tried a non PCI-E card on the original mobo with no POST, the two diff ram sticks been moved around like crazy, and the CPU shows no signs of burning or broken pins, but just not sure what else it could possibly be. I know mobos can be very faulty, but I mean 2 bad mobos is somewhat rare, and 3 would be Extremely unlikely (assuming this one I get at frys doesnt work, but praying it does).

Any input would be awesome. Thanks.

BTW if it matters, lian li pc-60b plus is case.
antec tp2 550w is psu.

I just picked up a new mobo, cpu, ram stick from frys. Just to test (then going to return for cash) since I am sick of waiting. But upon testing a new PSU (apparently it doesnt fit in my mobo) I noticed that the huge cord from my PSU that plugs into the mobo has a little piece missing. There are like 2 rows of little plugin parts on it and the copper (or other metal part) that lines the inside of one of the little plugin parts is missing. Really small, but is it possible that could be a problem? Going to test the new mobo, CPU, ram stick now see what I come up with. I am just hoping that the one part I did not buy which is a new PSU is not the part I need replaced.

Usually ATX supplies do have one of the holes empty. Thats not unusual. Could be a PSU as well. On the RAM did you run memtest? If not then go here: http://www.memtest86.com/ and let it run for an hour or two. The only thing that makes me stick to mobo or even psu is that if it were RAM or video, you would think you should get bios beeps telling you that.
