not sure that this belongs here (whoever is moderating will surely move it where it belongs instead of deleting it, i hope) but...

i have been thinking about building the thinnest p4 comp possible (think 1.25" at the most) keep in mind that this would be a desktop, flat and either wide or long.

i am trying to figure out why someone would want such a computer so as to sell my mother on it (i plan right now on making two and selling one to pay for the other) before anyone asks, i will post pics... this summer at the earliest, unless someone wants to donate parts for a $1500 comp.

case is going to be 2024 t3 aluminum bent, drilled and tapped by me and enameled black. i think i will be going for a sort of borg look here.

Edit:  y0w that aluminum is insanely expensive. f*** that. it's now gonna be all lexan. 1/8" should be strong enough long as nobody tries to sit on it.

Edit2: this means i will be cutting a few special holes in the rear to fit the i/o stuff w/o making the whole thing 1.5" tall.

not unless you can think of a way to get one to lie horizontally on a free tech f154 mobo.

check it out at servercase... they are the only carriers of that board that i know of.

btw, where can i get a dc-dc converter and external 100w psu w/o hacking a case?

i am also trying to come up with a name for this thing but i have been unsuccessful so far.

any ideas would be appreciated.

You'll have a hard time building a computer that thin. 1U computers are the thinnest PC's I've seen and they're 1.75" tall. Even then, there are some cooling issues. They tend to use a lot of small fans (40mm or blowers), which are really noisey due to high RPM's and tons of turbulance.

Any thinner than 1U and you'll have problems fitting a heatsink/fan, not to mention memory.

case is gonna be made of 1/8" polycarbonate plastic from online metals.

case screws are frozencpu 8mm acrylic corner cube screws. i will also buy the cubes so as to use them in my own case via hacking them up and plenty of testor's modeling glue.

ever heard of the ys tech high speed 60mm fan? 40cfm of see-yo-@$$-goodbye to heat.

and the heatsink is gonna be for an 80mm fan but with a vantec 120mm lo profile fan attached to the case directly above it. hehe, let's see that get hot.

i will also be using either a p4 3.06ghz proc or a celeron 3ghz.

directron's samsung mp0804h 80gb 2.5" hdd is the hard drive for this thing; their ts-l462 slim combo drive is gonna be the one here too.

for once i am forgoing the floppy.

Hey, you can check out the Opus power supplies.
150Watt link

Very expensive, ($219.00), but that's all I can think of for DC-DC unless you want to get some sort of inverter :D

Also, Opus has a 90 Watt DC-DC. Considerably cheaper at $159.00
90Watt Link

Any links to those low profile fans? I'd love so see some :D

The thinnest 120mm fan is 25mm, which is .98". That would leave you .27" to cram a heatsink, processor, and mobo between the fan and bottom of the case. I don't see it happening. At that clearance, the 120mm fan is big enough to start hitting capacitors and other surface-mount components. More power to you if it works out. I'll definately need some pics to believe it though.

I don't think 2" is that hard
Hell, you can just use a passive heatsink

:-@ OH HELL. f*** that then. also the fan i planned on using is actually 80mm.

anyone else have any brilliant ideas for cooling something in as small a space as possible?

(1) thinnest computer possible. i can do thinner than 2", tho, incidentally, it was indeed a 2" case that sent me on this idea.
(2) passive heatsink? on a celeron or p4? *snort of utter, abysmal disgust* it'd need it's own area code and chamber of commerce.

idea: remember the thread i did about flat lighting? i hinted at a future mod. i think this will be that mod.

the mod is to base a computer on the kadish tolesa age in uru. i have come to refer to this as the "myst mod" because uru is one of the games in the myst series.

this comp has to be uber cheap cuz i have less than $100 right now and mom is playing ebenezer scrooge's sister.

Edit: i will be rather pyst (pardon the pun pleez) if someone snatches this myst mod out from under me... i have yet to hear of one and i'd like to do the first.

i am looking for pyctures to show you of some stuff i want to base this thing on... will be a whyle (plz forgive the 'y' puns again)

Edit: will upload them soon.

I don't think you can do much on a $100 budget, even for a 486....but hey....what do I know. though if you do it right..you could use alluminum for the Top, and make the ENTIRE top of the case a passive heatsink...just an idea

i'm trying to sell my mom on the thing. if i can, then she will provide me with ~$1000-1500

keep in mind her first comp was an $80 zx-80 kit so for her any computer over $1000 is ridiculously expensive. mom is as geeky as a neanderthal... she only realized that her wireless keyboard had batteries in it when i told her.

$1000 Is ALOT better then $100, like 10 times better and stuff. ^_^ Anyways, what things are you trying to sell her on..I mean what will it take to convince her? And to tell you the truth, I know of atleast ONE Geeky Neandrethal...Brandon Freasier from "Encino Man"

i would have to make it practical in some manner... she does not think like a geek, i.e. if it is not at least as practical as aesthetic it is a waste. the concept of style modding is totally lost on her.

first three inspirational pics... or not.

dr3vil is refusing to upload them.

will investigate.

3rd set of 3:

http://www.nicoritschel.com/freehosting/userfiles/starhawk/Inner Pyramid 1.jpg

note the tree image in the lower-to-middle right corner... that will be a logo on the front, minus the hexagon... perhaps 2" would be better after all, hehe.

http://www.nicoritschel.com/freehosting/userfiles/starhawk/Kadish Tolesa Icons.JPG

i am thinking of having these wrapped around the sides of the comp.

http://www.nicoritschel.com/freehosting/userfiles/starhawk/Kadish Tolesa Logo.JPG

this is actually a possible logo for the kadish tolesa age. i don't know where i'll be using it, but i think i will somewhere.

starhawk, no offense man but this isn't a chatroom. Don't post like a billion times :p

As for a heatsink, you can use a 1U server heatsink, here's a llink
That thing is only 10mm high, definately small enough IMO.

1 millimeter = 0.0393700787 inches
10 millimeter = 0.393700787 inches

So, yeah, I think you will have plenty of room :D

Modding small sized computers is nothing new.

People mod computers to fit in DIN radio spaces, much smaller then what you're planning. Sorry to burst your bubble
;)

unlike you folks out there with actual lives, i have nothing better to do. i am not the kind to socialize, and i do not have anything else to do. if you don't like it, you don't have to pay me any attention.

yeah, but i want to put in a 3.06ghz proc... and that can't handle anything above a 2.0ghz proc.

 i meant the part about a myst themed mod, not the idea of a mini comp.

and good luck fitting in a comp that's smaller than 1.25". the rear i/o stuff is gonna make this a real squeeze.

Like you, I have nothing else better to do, all I'm asking is that instead of posting a reply every 5 seconds, just edit one of them and add onto it. Didn't mean to come off as a dick, I just know I'm not the only one who is slightly annoyed by you posting every minute or so :D. Like I said, no offense. I do want to help you with your project, since in fact, I would liek to make a small little PC as well, sine I have a spare 533MHz laying around.

Good luck :D

I was just giving you an idea of how small they CAN get, you may have to look around a little to find one t fit your needs.

:D wh00ps.

if you want i can pm you a couple hints toward making your comp, tho i'd need to know what proc you are using (sounds like a p1 or amd k6)

Do you have AIM? I won't be making this case anytime soon, as I'm kind of focused on two projects right now. 1. Finish my damn CarPC 2. Start my damn MOD! :D

i am LeoCH64 on aim.

i'll go ahead and sign in... start a whiteboard w/ me and we'll see about this thing.

my aim thing is crap. it only accepts people under 2 conditions. (1) is that i have an email address for them, (2) is that they have a .net passport.

i really don't know why this is, or why nobody else has that prob.

it's really no fun tho.
