Computer making high pitched sound

Randomly my computer just started making this really loud high pitched squealing sound. It's not coming from the speakers and it doesn't sound like it's coming from the fans (I can't really tell where it is coming from, it's hard to pin point it). Sometimes if I maximize a window or something it will get louder. The sound also stopped when I was on the desktop or if I switched user/logged out (except for one time when I was starting Windows it made the sound on the login screen). This sound just comes up randomly; I don't know if I have to do something specific for it to start.

Has anyone had this problem or heard anything about this sort of thing? I am completely confused, so any help would be nice. Thanks.

My System:

AMD XP 1800+
512 RAM
Soyo Dragon Plus Mobo
100 GB Western Digital HD 8MB Cache
GeForce 4 TI 4200

It's probably your monitor, try to lower your refresh rate and see if that helps.

....or just turn your monitor off and see if the noise goes away. Power supplies that get noisy, and cause things to oscillate and ring is a pretty common sign of an aging high voltage power supply. From what I know, there aren't too many ways to fix 'em if this is what's going on.....

Good Luck - B.B.S.

AMD's are known to make a very high pitched noise. This only happens early in their life and goes away after they have been fully burned in (about 1-2 months)
