I am trying to decide on an LCD to get. From what I have read I get the impression that NEC makes the highest quality monitors? Is this true? But the price on these monitors for what I'm looking for is more than I'd like to spend. The two I have been considering most strongly after a lot of reading are:

22-inch LCD LG Electronics FLATRON L226WTQ-BF Monitor

and

Samsung 226BW 22-Inch Digital/Analog Widescreen LCD Monitor

Both sound about equivalent from what I can see, and like pretty decent monitors, but I see many complaints about back-light bleed and now and then someone will go so far as to complain that they monitors are way to bright, hard to look at and severely fatigue the eyes after extended use, which concerns me.

22" seems like a good size for the cost, but it seems like all these 22" monitors have more quality complaints than 20" or 24" monitors.

I got the impression maybe the best quality monitor that would serve me well for my purposes would be the NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2-BK 20.1", but it costs a lot more than I'd like to spend!

I would like a monitor that is at least 20" and I would prefer to spend under $400.

One of the most important things for me is that the monitor should be easy on my eyes and that text be very comfortable to read, because I spend most of the day before my computer monitor working with text. But I also use my computer for watching movies and for gaming (not 3D shooters, but RPG and strategy games).

Well i would suggest going with the LG ..since the samsung 22 inchers use panel lottery. IF you could preselect a 22 inch samsung "S" panel from the lottery then it would likely be better ..otherwise just get the LG.
 
I just discovered another NEC model I hadn't seen before:


The 20" NEC MultiSync LCD2070NX

I have seen nothing but rave reviews for this monitor. Appears to use an IPS panel.

It is more expensive than the LG and 20" rather than 22".

But I'm almost tempted to get it anyway, just for the reassurance of quality.

Any opinions? Spend more for a 20" NEC? or is thee 22" LG good enough I should just go with it, and save money?
