Computer keeps restarting itself

This problem just showed up out of nowhere this afternoon on my computer.

Hardware: Intel q9650
Asus Maximus Formula MB
4 GB Kingston RAM
8800GT
Creative X-FI Elite Pro
XP Pro 32

I use AVG, Windows Defender, and Spybot. I use Windows Firewall and the firewall of my own router. I don't download anything questionable nor do I get stupid on the Internet.

I'm on my sister's computer right now because mine has suddenly become unuseable. It just decided to start restarting itself. No beeps. No symptons. No preamble. No sign of anything out of order.

The restarting became a lot more frequent and now I've given up using the machine and shut it down.

I have no idea where or how to begin going after this.

Any ideas?

over heating issues?

Nope, I've been able to rule that out. Machine is nice and clean, too.

I just booted into safe mode. I waited and then began to run AVG's virus scanner.

It restarted again. I'm not even getting five minutes. From what I gather, if this happens to me in Safe Mode, does that rule out a virus and lean me more toward a hardware issue of sorts?

I'll try and run Memtest...

EDIT: And guess what? The machine restarted two minutes into Memtest. This means I was never booted into Windows or anything.

I'm guessing that's a hardware issue of some kind I'm looking at? I almost wanted to see a BSOD because then at least I'd have something specific to work with.

I am thinking power supply problem if you have ruled out any heat issues.

That's my best guess or *gulps* some kind of motherboard issue.

When this kind of thing happens, it's always like: "Did I do something wrong or stupid?" I've never overtaxed this system so I'm reasonably confident that this is just some bad luck.

I purchased this computer from Maingear a couple of months ago, so I know they'll take good care of me. :)

I'll be calling them first thing Monday morning!

Yeh maingear will help you out. You made a wise decision and something a lot of people miss in building their own. You dont have to worry about rma calls to new egg or whatever. You call Maingear/Velocity Micro and they will make it right for you.

Q-ZB, so did you call us yet!?♥ haha...just checking to see if you were able to resolve the issues or come to a conclusion as to what the culprit was to the problem?

Hi there. Yes, I did and Gus and Giovanni took good care of me as usual.

Long/short...probably looking at a suspect issue with the PSU. Gus is pretty much intending to swap out that PSU almost immediately.

We tried updating the BIOS for the motherboard and that unfortunately didn't make any difference. I sent the machine out yesterday and you all should be receiving it before end of business tomorrow. :)

Did you run a memtest? Check the memory is working fine.

This shut down/restart happened even while running mem test. In Windows, out of Windows, Safe Mode, you name it...in the Bios, in Mem test...it just didn't matter.

Otherwise it sounds like a mobo or PSU issue.

Agreed. My system arrived today so I suspect I'll hear from one of the techs before long when they get into it.

Thanks again, Peter! :)

No problem, my pleasure.

By the way, Gustavo is already on it!!! I was just over there at his station playing with your drive bay covers while he was posting some tests.
