computer keeps freezing plz help

the last couple days my computer has been freezing up.
99% of the time it was while trying to surf the web. it just happend today with my yahoo mail and newegg as only tabs open using firefox.
I ran adaware and norton with nothing but some cookies found as usual.
I'm wondering if possibly my hard drive, motherboard or cpu is taking a crap.
I hit control alt del and my mouse pointer will turn to an hourglass but thats the most that will happen. I can click on stuff till I'm blue in the face and nothing happens. I end up having to hit the computer reset button until the next time it freezes up which has been quite often lately.

I built this computer in August of 2007 and havent really had any problems with it till now.
the specs are-
Q660 cpu, abit ip35 pro mobo, 2gb memory, and Nvidia GeForce 8800gt 512 video card
Samsung 250gb sata hard drive with over 200gigs free space.

any idea on where to start to figure out whats wrong and fix it?

Have you ran through the troubleshooting guide at the top of this forum?
 
ty for the heads up, no I did not notice that when I first posted.

I ran through the list on there-

# Ensure that the BIOS and hardware firmware/drivers are current (supports your entire system).
The bios and drivers are fine and current. I havent changed any hardware in over a year
with no problems till a couple days ago with freezing.

# Check (or recheck) all connections, both internal and external, and reconnect if necessary.
Nothing lose or unplugged found

# Visually inspect all components of your system. Check for any signs of damage or tampering.
No damage or tampering, Its just me that uses it.

# Ensure that your hardware is free of dust, dirt, or debris. Clean what you can, and replace what you can't.
Clean as a whistle. I blow the entire thing down with my air compressor regularly with the last time being about a month ago.

# Perform a search, within the forum or on the Internet, to see if others have experienced your problems before.
I found a thread about a problem similar to mine and trying a couple things from that thread.
I checked my event veiwer logs but I dont really know what I'm looking at. I can post a copy if it would help diagnose. Nothing that really jumps out with the time stamp of the lock ups.
all my hardware is running stock (not overclocked) and I have very good case cooling with multiple fans running.
I installed Speedfan v4.4 to check my temps and it keeps not responding every time I open it but closes without a problem. (seems like a different problem to me)

# If its a software/OS problem, you could Repair and/or reformat your OS installation (as a last resort).
I had some nasty popup problems about a month ago and did a fresh reformat and install of windows with no programs I didnt have before (until now trying to figure out what the problem is)
I ran windows error check and defrag on the hard drive without any problems found.
I havent had it lock up outside of firefox yet, I'm thinking of using ie for a while and see if it still locks up.

I have a couple more things to try but this is where I'm at right now.
 
Have you bumped or knocked over your case lately? Download hardware monitor (same people who made cpuz) and check your temps.

Otherwise, download malwarebytes and do a scan.

99 percent load while browsing? maybe your browser is infected with some malware or something did you do virus scans?

have you been visiting those very bad sites with . . . stuffs on them? if so, they coulda done drive by's like they do in the hood, instead of bullets, it's drive-by malwares. Do you torrent or other things? If so your "trusted source" could have infected you

since the situation only occurs when you're browsing, that limits it to being either a browser specific issue (i.e. some sort of bug or incompatiability if you have lots of addons installed) or some kind of malware

you should run what's known as the Combofix and report back with the results.

have you looked through your task manager and googled each of the processes you see in the process tab to see if anything that isn't supposed to be there is running?

Havent bumped the case lately, I don't download music or anything on this computer. I dont visit risky sites on this one either. I have all my pictures on here and play warcraft on this computer so I dont risk it. It is possible I still got something online tho. I know we are getting trickier and worse malware crap every day. I figured adaware or norton woulda cought something atleast if there was something wrong.
I am going to look up all the processes, did that one time before but didnt think of it this time.
If I dont find anything I'll try those programs you guys suggested and check back.
It froze up 6 times yesterday but only one time at 9am today. I cleared all temp files, something could have been in there?

tell you what

try downloading google chrome and see if the problem exists

that's just a band aid though, but try it, it's one part of the troubleshooting process

actually, also read that thread

it looks like the same problem you have, he has also

looks like it's isolated to Firefox

TRY chrome and see if you crash anymore

he also has the same processor you do, but i'm not sure how that's relevant

it froze up again late last night after a couple hours of gaming with no problems. this time it happened i just had facebook open on firefox. the difference between this guys problem and mine are that every single time mine freezes, its for good. I the only option I have is a hard restart with the reset button on the case.
I'm going to look more into it again today.
if anybody has any more ideas please chime in.

It just froze again and this time I was in the middle of a game of warcraft. nothing else open and had to do hard reset so that rules out firefox :(
