Computer Keeps Freezing: Please help!

A couple of months ago my computer locked up and I couldn't move anything at all, after restart it was fine but the last 2 weeks its been happening more and more frequently, does anyone know what could be causing the problem? I haven't overclocked anything at all nor have I modded my case. At first I thought at first it might be that my computer was dusty but cleaning it didn't help.

My best guess is its a problem with my video card since it only seems to lock up when I'm playing games or watching TV.

If anyone has any insight on this problem please let me know.
 
I forgot to mention that my monitor has just shut off (not literally but acts as though the computer has been turned off) inexplicably 2 or 3 times. I though it was because its a garbage monitor but maybe it's relevant.
 
Do you have virus scan? That could be it. You said it locks up durring games, it could be a heat problem. make sure the little fan on ur video card is working. One way to tell if its heat is if it locks up after a certain amount of time (with heavy use). If its more random, it might be a virus, spyware, hardware problems.

if that doesnt fix it...
with ur monitor turning off sometimes power could be the problem. You might try getting a battery backup to condition the power coming in. You might also try plugging it in to another part of the house... see if you get the same symptoms.
 
Set to auto in cmos , it may cause hangs if enabled
 
(I've been lurking for waaay to long, figured I'd start actually posting!)

Anyhow, I've been having the exact same problems. If I browse the internet or play games that don't stress anything (turned base strat, or something like that) it won't lockup, but UT2K4, or more intensive games lock up ever 15-65 minutes (completely random).

Checked for viruses, using the "conservative" BIOS settings, no OC, made sure I was clean of spyware, etc. Did a clean install of XP, it fails with just XP, SP1 and SP2 (RC1). So updating doesn't seem to fix anything.

I've had problems with this for 8 months not and just can't seem to fix it. I'm guessing it is my motherboard or memory (tried a different processor and power supply).

My POS system (I got it on a tight budget when the 1700 was 120 bucks):
Athlon 1700 XP
Soltek nForce2 mobo (forgot exact model)
2x256 DDR-333 (generic cheap stuff)
IBM 40gb HD (yeah I know, I know, I got a good deal on it when I bought it!)
Geforce 4 MX-440

I'm not too worried if I can't fix it, I'm planning on getting nice new $2000 dollar rig for myself as a x-mas gift this year.

I know there is a current issue with Hyperthreading and the TV Tuner cards. It would randomly lock up my system till I downloaded the fix. If you haven't yet installed that I would suggest it. http://web.tampabay.rr.com/jt007/TUNERFIX.exe I don't believe they offer this fix on MS site. I had to call in order to recieve it.
 
Sounds like your GPU could be overheating. I had a similar problem, the computer would run fine until I played video games and then it would freeze up. I poped open the case and sure enough, a stray wire got stuck in the GPU's fan. Moved the wire, and no more problems. Just take a gander in there make sure your fan on you video card is running.
