computer keeps freezing at scan disk???

Well easch time i start my computer, it goes to scan disk because the computer was not shut down properly, it does not scan however then a few minutes later a message appears saying scandisk could not scan drive c as there may be a problem with the fat, something like that and then just freezes, what could be the problem?
 
That message still exists?
What OS are you using? You should convert your drive to NTFS.
 
well its really my younger brothers computer, its windows 98 and because its old i dont really have much of a clue on what to do lol but i was hoping someone does, oh do you think the computer has reached its date?
