Alright well I've been using SlanXP for my theme for quite sometime now. When the power went out the other day my computer turned off and booted up fine. However, the black start menu now appeared white. No biggy. So I go into the display properties to change my theme. It is still listed as modified theme. Under the tab I see a theme I've never seen before labeled "A-something"; I can't recall the exact name. Click that for the hell of it and no changes occur so I then click on windows classic theme. This is where shit hits the fan.

My taskbar, background, everything is now completely black. I right click to go to display properties and the menu isn't even visible because the text, background, blocks, everything is black. Anywhere I have to enter text on a webpage/forum is completely blacked out as well.

I want to avoid formatting if possible, but right now that seems like my only option since the theme has screwed everything up. I have two drives 1 x 80 and 1 x 250. The 80 has XP installed on it and the 250 is used for storage. I was able to copy my "My Documents" folder and paste it into the 250 by using shortcuts alone. So if I reformat and install XP onto the 80 will all my files on the 250 be safe? Also, if there is another way around this please help me out. Thanks Hardforum.

Well I decided that reformatting is really the only way to go. Fingers are crossed

Your data files should be fine. And yeah, I bet the problem is fixable, but not having the graphical interface is a total nightmare. Best to just reformat.

Really makes you wonder about the necessity of having a UPS. A few months ago my laptop battery suddenly died while I was in the middle of surfing the net, and then my entire C: partition was corrupted after that. Thank god I don't keep my data files there.
