History:
- Summer arrives, high 70s a few weeks ago, up to mid 90s F now
- Over past 3 weeks, noticed high CPU temps, 60-80 c
- Thought hard-drives were overheating, remounted hard-drives apart, tried to boot computer, computer would no longer turn on - no fan spin, no lights, nothing.
- Did noob application of new thermal paste, using fingers, over old thermal paste
- Turned out my PSU died (coincidence or possibly related) - got new PSU
- Computer worked fine, although still running hot
- Over past few days computer instantly shuts off without warning at random times while not under load, only happens once or twice a day. The only way to turn it back on is to disconnect the power cord, discharge the power by pressing the power switch, and then plugging it back in and powering on.
- Wake up yesterday, notice monitor is in stand-by cycle - monitor is now broken and takes like 10 minutes to boot up
- Yesterday: cleaned all thermal grease from cpu/heatsink, reapplied Arctic Silver 5 using specific instructions, idle temp went from high 50s to low 40s and load temp went from 60s-low 80s to mid 50s.
- Computer still randomly shutting off.
- Example: Last night, 3 AM, computer instantly shuts off while I am just browsing the internet, no warning and idle load
- Turn computer back on, go to bed, wake up, it's still on. Quickly check my email, go to bathroom, come back, computer off. Turn it back on, write this post.
Any ideas what's going on here?
I thought it might have been bad wall power - as my power cord was previously directly connected to the wall outlet, so I moved it to my power strip - still happening. No other applications on said strip lose power.
I also thought it might have been an overheating video card, but as you can see, the temps are fine. I am really at a loss here, is this PSU a lemon too? The only significant environmental change is that it's hot as hell now, which leads me to think overheat - but it doesn't look like anything is overheating, and all but one of the shut offs have been at night when its coolest, the only daytime one being just now - although what's up with those weird readings on the ssd?
