Ok so I am still in the brainstorming stage, but I want better quality audio in my car, and this solution takes away the piles of cd's in my car. Any ideas, suggestions anything?? Have any of you guys tried this? Basically I want to have a computer in my trunk with all my music on it, and go directly to the amps. My main concern right now is access to the computer from the drivers seat. Any ideas on how to change the songs and such?? Also I am real real broke so the cheaper the better :). Your thoughts?

Regards,
Brian

The carputer idea is cool, but have you thought about getting an iPod and an interface adapter that will work with your head unit? It's what I've used in my car for 2 years now and it's always been flawless. It works particularly well on decks with LCD displays, but a normal deck could be just as good. It's definitely a lot cheaper and easier to set up. But of course, if you are a diehard DIY'er (and I can relate), then check out that site for sure.

mp3car is the place to look for info. I'm in the final stages of building mine. I'd be done now but my X-fi burned out (my fault) and I'm in the process of looking for replacements.

To answer your questions. You access the computer via touchscreen. They can be had for $250 to about $700 for the sunlight readable models. If you need a small keyboard (my setup has an onscreen keyboard) the PS3's Madcatz wireless pad works awesome. I use that in a pinch. Logitech also has a slightly larger keyboard coming out. You really don't need the keyboard since various front ends take care of everything for you.

Here's my screen in place:
