Computer freezing, cant figure out why

My computer freezes sometimes after startup, and everyone once in a while randomly while Im doing something. I am overclocked, but Im not getting any bluescreens and prime95 says Im stable for 24+ hours.

Whats going on? Any ideas?

Again, no bluescreens, just freezing randomly and sometimes after startup.
 
in the past month i've had 2 systems in my hands with this problem. Both of them had bad stick(s) of RAM.

What type of OC are you running?

What are your temps? Are all your fans spinning including your vid card?

I second the memtest86.

Try setting everything back to stock speeds and see if the issue dissapears.

Update all your drivers.

Check your event viewer and see if that has any useful information.

You should also download, update, and run adaware and spybot. After that, run a free virus scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com (do it even if you do have a steamy pile of crap like Norton. It can be comprimised and rendered useless by nasty viruses)

If none of that solves the issue, you could try swapping out the PS. A failing PS can cause all kinds of crazy issues.
 
I know the drill, I run my own computer repair business... but this one semi has me stumped. I will run memtest tonight while I sleep, its about the only thing I havent tried.

It would be helpful to us if you listed everything you have already tried.

Have you run a thorough chkdsk yet?

Are you stable if you loop 3dmark for several hours?

Did you or your auto update install SP2?
 
I havent installed SP2 yet due to jookie junk going wrong with my other box because of it.

PSU is definitly an option, Ive got an Aluminum 400w Powmax...

I have an Antec true 430 sitting on my desk, but I dont want to install it in my current case (I have alot of akward PSU mods that it wont work with)... so I am waiting to finish my new case.
 
Alright, Memtest ran for about 11 hours with 0 errors.

The problem has seemed to worsen.

I got a bluescreen while playing a game that was talking about a memory dump, my computer froze 3 or 4 times in a row when trying to boot up my computer....


It doesnt make any sence at all.


Prime stable, memtest stable, yet non-operational? It never crashes when Im running prime.

Chances are I will just format.
 
Ok, problem still exists. Dont know what it is. Ive completely removed everything while trying to avoid formating... (currently trying to buy a raptor to have a reason to start over).

Whenever the computer freezes, it seems to freeze right after a restart (while in windows). At most, this happens 2 or 3 times after the initial freeze... then its fine for a while. WTF BBQ???


I say PSU... but I cant currently check this possibility.

Also, Ive gotten blue screens before. Usually memory dumps. Memtest is stable. WTF?

My computer is going to get completely RMAd if its not fixed with a format.


Ive upped the voltages on ram and cpu thinking it might be low for some reason or another... nothing helps.
 
Have you tried reseating your ram? Despite it passing the memtest, it still could be a possibility. Also try taking all your sticks and booting with them one at a time and see if that helps. Also, try pulling PCI cards, one of them might be causing freezes. This happened to me once and I finally, after days of trying, traced it to my sound card. Also, check your optical drives, pull the molexes on each one at a time and see if its a drive causing something to screw up. But the best thing is to format and start all over.
 
I ran prime95 again last night in safe mode, this time it failed after 3 hours.


Now... if memtest is stable, does that "really" mean my memory is fine?
