Computer freezes while mining and playing BF4

My computer has been acting odd because I used to be able to play BF4 and mine with my other three graphics cards no problem. However, as of last night, it freezes after about 10 minutes of playing BF4. I tried lowering the cpu clock speed. I also tried only running two graphics cards for mining while I played BF4, but no dice. I was able to run one graphics card with BF4.

I'm running a AIDA64 torture test on my 4770k CPU overclocked to 4.6Ghz at 1.31v while mining full blast on my 4 R9 290's, and I have no problems. That should be using more power than mining with 3 graphics cards and playing BF4.

Nothing has really changed recently except that I started connecting my secondary monitors to my integrated graphics card.

I have a LepaG1600 PSU, four XFX R9 290's under water, and a 4770k with a Gigabyte OC Force motherboard.
 
have you tried turning off mining completely while playing BF4 ?
 
lol you cant doing anything on your pc with a intensity of 20. I wouldnt even game while mining. do one or the other.

No, you don't get it. The card the game is coming from isn't mining.

The intensity of the cards that are mining doesn't matter if your monitor isn't connected to them.
 
really though, you are trying to do too much with one PC. build a gaming PC and a mining rig, will simplify things for you. until then, kill mining while gaming.

That's certainly an option but I'd like to know if anyone has any better ideas. I know this can work, I've done it before. I mine and game on my other computers all the time by only mining on the alt cards.
 
Check your VRAM usage.

I'll recheck, but I believe if you run cgminer in a system, even with GPU 0 as OFF it still consumes VRAM. Some games don't mind since there issue enough vram to go around, BF4 may be another story. Plus the patches may have done something also.

I run 3 other cards mining and one gaming on my main rig, it's certainly possible.
 
try disabling two of your four video cards and see what happens -- might be some odd power issue

I know what you are attempting to do -- I've done it partially successfully with my crossfire 290 setup. If the above doesn't work for you -- seriously consider turning the intensity down to 13 for the other cards while gaming. Sure you won't get max hash rate for the hour or two you are gaming, but something is better than nothing. I20 is torture on your system when it comes to doing ANYTHING else but mining. Even when I have Intensity set to 13, and only gaming on one card it's still nowhere near as smooth if I have mining disabled. (i5 2500k highly overclocked too)

When not in Xfire mode, I could game on the primary GPU and mine with the other but the experience wasn't smooth at all. any scrypt mining takes up huge amounts of memory, throw on top BF4 which is not known to be gentle with memory either, (and buggy to boot for most) it's just a recipe for something bad to happen.

Power issue -- or just asking too much of your system with the intensity you are running. That's my guess.
 
No matter what you do this will not work very well. Backing intensity down to like 13 or less and you may be able to do some hashing while gaming but this is a one or the other kind of thing. Back when we GPU mined BTC you could easily do both but scrypt is different.

You have 2 options, build a dedicated mining box or give up gaming. I have a 290x in my desktop and I've lost my desktop to mining. I just haven't gotten around to setting it up in the basement because last time I tried I lost over 100k so I've just left it where its at in my desktop.

No dude, you don't get it. I'm running the game on one out of four GPUs. The one running the game is not mining, so intensity doesn't matter. The other 3 gpu's are mining. I've done this one three separate systems, and it works. For some reason this particular system is acting up now.

Ok, now this is interesting. So even with the GPU off RAM is still consumed huh. Ill start watching the VRAM usage.

I have two other mining rigs with only two R9 290's in them, and my brothers play games on one card while the other is mining ALL the time. They BF4 too. I don't see why have three cards mining with one off is any different from having 1 off and 1 mining. Also, this computer used to work perfectly. I played BF4 like this for two weeks while mining on my alt cards.

I would also like to say that the argument that mining really slows down your system even if you're not using that graphics card to drive your display is completely false. I use my integrated graphics card to drive my monitor, and I actually play WoW all the time while my four R9 290's are mining. No lag at all.
