Recently, I purchased a new computer online. the configurations are as follows:
CPU: (754-pin) AMD ATHLON64 3400+ CPU w/ Hyper Transport Technology [+100]
CD: COMBO DRIVE (16X DVD-ROM & 52x32x52 CD-RW)
HDD: 160GB 7200 RPM ATA 100 HARD DRIVE
HDD2: 160GB 7200 RPM ATA 100 HARD DRIVE
MOTHERBOARD: (754-pin Socket) ASUS K8V SE Deluxe VIA K8T800 Chipset AGP8X w/LAN,USB2,IEEE,&Audio
MEMORY: 1024 MB (512MBx2) PC3200 400MHz Dual Channel DDR MEMORY(GEIL VALUE RAM)
RAID: RAID-0 (DATA STRIPPING)]
After the computer arrived, it would not boot from a windows disc. As I found out it was because I needed a raid driver. After some trouble, I asked for the assistance of a more tech-savvy friend. He created a diskette with the driver, booted from it, installed xp. After the computer was up and running, I began installing softrware and generally configuring my new system. For a reason unknown to me, the computer began freezing constantly. his has continued. Every 20-60 minutes teh computer will freeze completely and I am forced to reboot. Being an utter n00b i have no idea why. Could it be a bad Raid-0 installation, bad interaction between the mobo and the cpu, a problem with the hard drives?. If anyone could please help me out i'd appreciate it greatly. sorry for my stupid n00b question.

edit: o yea i updated xp with service pack two and most of the automatic updates so im fairly sure its not a software issue but rather something to do with the hardware. thanks again for ur help.

How are your CPU temps?

Also, what kind of power supply are you using (brand and wattage)?

What are your temps ?

It could be thats it takes 20-60 mins to overheat then it freezes.
Is it happening totally at random or can you force it to do it.
Is it more likely to freeze when you stress the CPU ?

Luck........ :D

well, according to the temp display on the outside of the case, its at a pretty constant 76-77 degrees. as far as the power supply its a 450 watt standard case power supply. the case being a ALUMINUM Z-ALIEN CASE W/ WINDOW. idk if that helps, because, as i said, i am hardware retarded

Is that temperature monitor reporting case or CPU temperatures? Celsius or Farenheit?

If that's CPU temp in Celsius, then it may be a heat problem..

Check your BIOS instead of the temp monitor on your case.

its in fahrenheit. how do u check the temperature using the BIOS...sorry for the stupidity

Go into bios, and poke around until you find the option. I'm not familiar with your BIOS, but it should be in there somewhere. Alternatively, you could try the software packaged with the motherboard, there should be some type of monitoring program that you can install from a CD.

If your CPU temps are above 60 degrees Celsius, then it might be the problem.

While you're at it, see what the voltages are on your power supply, you can check this through the BIOS as well. If they are far off spec, then the power supply might be at fault.

Telling a hardware noob who has an already malfunctioning computer to go "Poke around in bios" is as safe as poking a sleeping dragon in the eye...

As to reply to your question about the comp... A wizard did it...

i installed a prog found on the mobo cd as u suggested. the cpu temp. is 37 *c the mobo temp. is 34C , the cpu fan is at 2721. the prog is telling me tho that the pwoer fan and chassis fan are both at 0. could that b the problem?

Doubt it, that just means that the fans aren't capable of reporting the RPM. Check your power supply voltages, your temps are fine.
