hey guys im building a computer for my brother and his wife. itll be mostly used for recording and sound mixing and some video editing. might be using it for some CAD stuff as well. im going with intel on this for their multi-tasking goodness. was kind of iffy about the amount of RAM though. im not sure i should go with 1gig or just 512MB?
i know im going with the sound blaster audigy 2 ZS platinum. they want one that has the breakout box so they can record directly to the computer. most likely gonna get a 9800pro for it cuz they would play some games on it. what im asking for is a list of prices on parts because they dont want to spend more than $1200 on this. ive put together a list of parts myself using newegg's prices.

not sure if i should go with the P4 3.2Ghz or the 2.8Ghz
possibly the P4C800-E DELUXE or the IC7-G MAXII ADVANCE but still unsure.
unsure about the RAM. either corsair, crucial or linksys hoping for 1gig but 512 would be good.
need lots of storage. 250gb western digital w/ 8mb cache
9800pro

i have the cd-rw and the dvd burner picked out already.
havent decided on a case. buying the PSU seperately.

If you're going to be doing cad and video editing, you definitely need at least a gig of ram. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. It's totally necessary.
 
Yes, for RAM, try to go 1GB, but of course the computer isn't going to be a dog with 512, just that 1GB is better. Remember, you can always add more RAM later, but it's hard to add more MHZ because you can't reuse any of the old Mhz. i.e. the cost of going from 512MB RAM to 1GB is the cost of 512MB of RAM. The cost of going from a 2.8Ghz CPU to a 3.4Ghz CPU is the cost of the 3.4Ghz CPU, you can't just buy 600Mhz of cpu to add on to the 2.8.

If that reasoning made any sense to you, then you'll know that if it's a toss between the RAM and a faster processor, get the faster processor, wait a few months and then upgrade the RAM.
