need to put together a computer for my mom for christmas and it needs to be under $600. she is mainly going to use the computer for word processing and the internet. i have fallen behind in computer parts and do not know what it out now so i was hoping you guys could give me a few ideas. if you guys could give me some ideas on cpu, mobo, vid card it would be apreciated. thnx

AMD Sempron 2400+
Shuttle AN35N-Ultra
2x256 MB Corsair Value Select
Seagate 80 GB hard drive
ATI Radeon 9200SE

Pick a case bvased on what your mom would like. You coudl find a cheap one that should coem with a decent 350W PSU

Is there anything else needed like Monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers?

thnx for the suggestions....im assuming the sempron is what replaced the duron for amd and that sounds like she wont need more power then that for what she will be doing. now i just need to decide on what hd to get and weather or not to get her a vid card instead of using the integrated one.

I would recomend:

this motherboard

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-486&depa=1

and that processor http://www.pcloft.com/amdatxpcpu331.html

Simply because the last time I checked AMD systems still made better budget pc's

I am pretty sure that given the XP is rated 2800+ and the P4 is 2.8ghz, the hyperthreading on the P4 will make the difference in desktop type work. And I am not an intel !!!!!!, I am typing this on an AMD system.

what all does she have? definately need to know what you can reuse.

i just priced out a box i'm gonna use for for a linux box for just under 300. but that's with no monitor, mouse, kb, or speakers. i wouldn't recommend that box for a comp with a gui, but it'd be fine for linux cli. i'm sure for around 400 you could get a decent one if she doesn't need the monitor and other peripherals.

not much is gonna be reusable. right now she is on the 1st comp i ever built which is a pII 350mhz with a 10gig hd and some crappy pc100 ram or something. the monitor on this comp also sux so i will probly get her a new one. my main question is if you guys think i should use integrated vid card since she doesnt do any gaming???? ive never used one so i dont know what they are like.

also both comps you guys have peiced together look good.

Get a cpu/mobo combo at fry's. I purchased the Deleron 320 with the ECS 848P-A Mobo for 69.99$ and it performs better than a FX-51... I overclocked from 133 fsb (2.4) to 195 (Max - 3.51), and it works great.

i say yes. if the mobo has it, it'll save you some good money if you don't have to get a vid card. onboard video is perfectly fine for non-gamers.

That is only ugly HDD

try this one: http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4008242 for 49.99 after MIR 2x the GB of the one you posted, and its got 8mb cache, lol i know i've been posting it alot but its a sexy deal

Don't stick her with a Prescott. No need. Get a 2.4C ~$150 at Newegg, and the Asus P4P800-MX, which has integrated video, for ~$65 at Newegg. Other than that the Intel setup is good, because yes Hyperthreading will help to some extent.

That would work too. When I am given a budget, I like to max it out :)

all prices are off the top of my head and are approximate because they change so often.

shuttle an35n ultra - $50
amd 2200+ 35watt - $77
zalman 7000alcu - $30
512mb mushkin pc3200 - $80
80 gig 8mb cache HD - $60
9000 pro vid card - $50
antec w/ 350w sp - $65
a tube of as5 - $15 (keep the extra)
52x lite on burner $30

i am still only up to $457

you can add a floppy, but why? unless you want a black one.

that computer will be way more than she could need.. here is another one..

shuttle sn45gv2 - $210
amd 2200+ 35w - $77
512mb mushkin pc3200 - $80
80 gig 8mb cache hd - $60
9000 pro vid card - $50
52x lite on burner - $30
tube of as5 - $15 (keep the extra)

$522..

also in option 1. the shipping on that case will be $15.. from newegg at elast. maybe get a case and HD locally.. and hopefully you have a goodwill near you that sells monitors.. i just got a nice 17inch crt with a trinitron flat tube.. for $13 last weekend.. it is much brigther and more colorful than my NEC fe950+bk 19inch that i spent nearly $300 on two years ago

nice, but only ata 100 (not 133), but depending on your use, you might not see a difference if the hard drive won't be used much.

I really doubt that the drive will ever see more than 100 burst anyway.

This is my $600 computer:
Dell Dimension 8400 (925x chipset)
P4 3GHz
128MB x300 SE PCI-E

$409

upgrades:
sold 512MB for $120, bought 1GB for $178
sold CD-RW + modem for $35, bought a Lite-On 166S $6 and a Lite-On 812S $54
sold x300SE for $65, bought a 6600GT for $179
