I'm building a computer for my cousins, who aren't big gamers (more or less internet flash games). One is going into high school and the other into eigth grade so they need something to surf the net, research, write papers, etc.

I have an optical drive, and a copy (legit) of WinXP and Office.

Case: Antec Solution SLK1650B Black Steel ATX Mini Tower Computer Case 350W Power Supply - Retail $72.99
HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JB 80GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive - OEM $43.99
HSF: Zalman CNPS-7000 Alcu $29.99
Memory: pqi POWER Series 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Unbuffered System Memory Model MD3412UOE - Retail $38.99
Mobo/CPU: BIOSTAR P4M80-M4-COMBO35 Intel Celeron D 315 Socket 478 VIA P4M800 Micro ATX Motherboard/CPU Set - Retail $79.99

The total here is $265.95. I was wondering what you guys thought about the components, mainly the mobo/CPU set and the case/power supply. I wanna try and keep the costs low ~250, cause another system I am considering is the Dell B110 for 300 even.

You should be fine with the PSU, as antec makes some decent ones. The smart power line is their value product though, but you probably don't need to worry since you're using a celery stick... erm, celeron

I would go with the dell because you still need an OS and I am going to assume your cousins don't really want linux. A legal copy of XP home is like $90 iirc, so that is about a third of your budget.

My advice would definitly be to NOT buy the parts new. Get them here at [H] for much cheaper! Maybe even a full budget system. I've built two full systems from used parts at [H] and no part has ever failed and I saved my family a ton of money!! If your set on buying new for the warranties than the setup looks fine to me. Why the extra $30 for a third-party CPU HSF? Doesn't seem necessary for a celly to me.

he said he already has a legit copy of XP and Office.
I had a Celeron 325 about a year ago and it never got over 34c with the stock cooler. Spend the extra on a little bit bigger HD like 160GB or so. It may just com in handy. ALso I think Wintec AMPO memory is a couple bucks cheaper. I've bought three sticks of it for two different computer and have never had a problem with it.

eh, they want the pc to be quiet.

im looking through the FS/FT section and have found a few things...dunno...i'll keep looking.

Put up a WTB thread, it seems like many people here have old systems collecting dust in the closet. You may even find someone local. :D
