the computer is a pentium 2 processoer(one of those vertical slot ones)
Recently the computer just shut off one day i guess, because when i got to it it was off. It tried turning in on but it wont. I have plugged and unplugged the psu, reset bios and left it like that for 2 hours then tried it again and still doesnt work. when i push the power button i notice the fans start running for a second and then quit promptly.

Is there any way to find out what burn out or what's wrong. Im pretty sure it's either the motherboard or processor. How do i find out which one is burned out? alos i dont hgave any other pentium 2's lying around so i cant try another one.

any help would be appreciated
 
Does it power up at all? If not it sounds like maybe the PSU died.
 
well, it powers up for like a half a second and all the fans spin and then stop.
the leds on the keyboard also are light up so it i guess the psu is working. i ll try the psu on my otther copmuter to see if it works
 
update - i tested the psu on another pc and it works fine

can you tell physically if a capacitor has blown or not. Does it look burnt or something?
 
It's likely the mobo, the PSU is powering the fans, so it's likely working, but the mobo isn't passing the power correctly. Check you capacitory (barrel shaped things about 1/2 in tall, likely near the proc.) on your mobo for obvious defects ('crap' coming out the sides of the caps.). Could be other things, but this is often detectable by visual inspection. GL.
 
i checked the mobo and all the capacitators look fine and healthy.

It's not conclusive, the mobo is still likely the suspect, its just that caps going bad are common to some mobos...

edit: You only need a couple of things to boot to an error message. PS and mobo, some proc. and some memory (failing memory or CPU should generate a beep message). Those alone should generate some error message (beeps or actual error on the screen). You getting neither, so it's likely PSU or mobo, and the PSU is supplying some power, making the mobo the most suspect.
 
i guess its a bad mobo then.

i have been thinking about and im just goign to get a whole new mobo and cpu. I can get a amd xp cpu and a decent motherboard for a $110. And it will be a hundered times better then the piece of crap 300mhz.
