Computer dead

My dad has a PC comprised of old parts,

CPU= 3800 x2
motherboard= Asus m2n-e
Ram= Corsair value 2 gig
GPU= xfx 7900GT
PSU= Hyper 550 watt ( possibly 6 years old, i know terrible.)


Two problems and they're probably connected, firstly there was a warning about USB drawing too much power for a while and now the PSU does not work. Is there any easy way of testing the PSU just to make sure thats the problem and not the mother board. I looked on you tube and saw a paper clip method is this a good idea?

Not to mention the PSU was making vibrating noises for ages so i wouldn't be surprised if it was toast

That is a real shitty PSU, I wouldn't even bother testing to see if it still works. Borrow a known good PSU and see if it boots, most likely it will. While most of the time when the PSU goes out it does sometimes take stuff with it it's almost always apparent when that happens. You can usually smell and/or see burn marks on the part it destroys.

Using the paper click trick to see if the PSU will turn on will be okay. Just make sure it's on a surge protector where you can easily trip the power off if you need to.

Obviously if it turns out the components fried he will have to invest in a cheap AMD set up, he uses the Computer for Skype, internet and little else. most of the time uses his ipad.

Neither one of them are good buys.

Search for a Corsair CX430. Price should be equivalent to ~$45 USD.

Thanks i told him to go with the CX430 V2, Overclockers seem to use that PSU in all there low/mid end AMD builds as well.
