Hey guys! :) Great forum, congratulations!

First of all sorry for some possible bad english, im portuguese.

The problem i have is very simple to describe: My pc wont turn on! i went to
work and left him working normally, until i returned and noticed that he was
"dead to the world". That happened 1 week after 1 bought a new excelent PSU
(OCZ Powerstream 520). I cant tell what really caused that, but he doesnt seem
to turn on. I have already:

1 - cleared the CMOS/reseted the BIOS, by taking of the battery;

2 - removed the power cable and plug him in back again;

3 - removed all the hardware, one by one, leaving only the motherboard & psu
with only the speaker and atx power switches connected...

...and still nothing!! not even a beep, only the power & lan LED working. I noticed also
that when i press the power button the power Led flashes, but thats all.

Is my mobo fried or sth? all the voltages of the psu were correct, because it was giving
all the 3 green lights (no under or overvoltages there).

I know, u guys need my specs, so here they are:

- AMD Athlon Xp 2200+
- Asus A7N8X
- Samsung 768 DDR 333
- Sapphire ATI 9800 SE
- PSU OCZ Powerstream 520w
- HD´s: WD 80Gb, Seagate 60gb,Maxtor 40Gb
- Audigy 2 Nx UAB (sukz, dont buy it! )
- anything else (?)

Plus, i think that maybe some overvoltage from the electrical outlet could be the
source of my problem, and fried something, but phisically or visually i cant tell
nothing.

Any help from u guys? im really needing my pc back to work... :(

do you have your old power supply? If so plug it in & see what happens. Did you check the voltage switch on the power supply? Make sure it is to the proper voltage.
Double check all wiring - make sure nothing is improperly seated, shorting or grounding.
get (or borrow) a power supply tester see if it is your power supply.
how much do you know about taking things apart? IF you know how (please do not try this if you have any question - may be a professional would be best) take the power supply apart and see if the fuse is popped.
good luck.

First of all sorry for some possible bad english, im portuguese.

your english is actully pretty good for a non native speaker :D , just work on your pronouns.
but yea id definately try your old psu it may just be that your psu died or it could be overvoltage.

This may be a silly question, but I have seen a couple of these lately-- any burnt smell from the PSU or motherboard? Any of the capacitors look "rupturerd" (burst) with brownish fluid leaking out (might have to look very carefully).

The last customer I saw that had this same problem had to replace his motherboard and power supply. He was lucky.

The only way you can really be sure is to take each component out and test them in a known, working machine.

Skystalker: No burnt smell or similar. I´ve checked closely and the components seem to be intact. Yet, i didnt opened the PSU because of warranty issues.

cell_491: no overvoltage, because the PSU had the right settings. the psu LED´s in the back indicate green light, in other words the voltage is correct, or else yellow or red light would be displayed (just in case: http://www.cooltechzone.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=576 ).

HvyMtl: I sold my old psu (lol), but I think I can borow another one from a friend. maybe ill try that.

But dont you guy´s think this PSU in witch i spent around 130€, should not die "just like this"? Its one os the best Psu´s in the market! the manufactor says that under or overvoltage should not be a problem im most cases.

My guess is that the problem is in the mobo...

one way to check is to remove unplug everything from your psus then to the green wire to the left of the clip on the psu's atx connector with any black wire on the atx connector and see if the psu fan comes on, if so then its doubtlfull thats theres any thing wrong with it

Ok, another suggestion is getting (or borrowing) a power supply tester (around $10 US) to plug into your power supply - some power supplies will not react to the cell_491 suggestion. (Besides if you get the wires wrong you could do harm to the power supply)
Really the easiest way of finding the problem is borrowing a known working power supply - and test your parts in a known working system.
Things to check - I assume you took your system apart to install your new power supply (or at least partially apart.) Make sure that the motherboard, power supply, various wires and cables are not "grounding" - touching bare metal -
I hated it when I had to go thru this (mine was a dead power supply - electrical shock)
make sure you have a good surge suppressor between your system and the wall outlet.

As i said there, I already tested with another PSU, and guess what... nothing!

The problem continues, witch makes me think that the mobo is really dead.
I was almost sure that couldnt be the PSU, its very difficult to that excelent psu
died this way... right?

I´ve connected the old psu (that i´m sure that is working. lol) and he didnt give me
any response.. not even a frekin breep!

Suggestions? or should i just buy a new mobo and thats it?

stay well.

I was almost sure that couldnt be the PSU, its a bit impossible that an excelent psu
like this dies this way... right?

Sounds like a dead motherboard to me. Maybe a lightning strike or power surge caused it? The next thing I would do is borrow your friend's machine and test out your components (HDD, RAM, vid card, etc) to ensure that they are not damaged. If they are OK I would buy a new mobo.

You do have a surge protector between the wall and the PSU, correct?

sorry :(

Wrong.. lol

I know i should have one, but here they are beyond expensive here, and thats the reason
i spent so much in a good PSU. :D

It is a risk, but i am almost sure that a new mobo should do the job. My next problem is
the following: I am going to upgrade the mobo, but since i have an AMD Athlon XP 2200+
i cant buy a much better board, because the new ones are all suporting 64bit cpus and not the older ones... I guess im going to get a mobo like this one without upgrade.. :

There are still some excellent XP mobo's out there...

After my research, I chose mine-- ASUS K7N8X-E Deluxe... has all the toys, including Soundstorm (NV Sound, good quality), SATA, RAID, Firewire, 8 USB, and Gigabit Ethernet (plus NV Ethernet). Also has option for an add-in wireless internet from ASUS.

ASUS K7N8X-E Deluxe... hum.. i cant seem to find this product in sales here in my shitty country... lol. Only A7N8X models... Sincerelly im not an expert in motherboards, maybe im doing a wrong search... can u give me a link to the official page or sth?

Isnt A7N8X ?

thankz anyway dude

MG.

Might also look into DFI boards, either the LanParty series, or the Infinity series...they are really great stable and overclocking boards.

ok, you had a shock of some sort to your system (most likely through the wall socket to your system) May I suggest getting a simple surge protector (they should not be too expensive - decent ones in the US cost around $20 US) Since you have had a problem with that electric outlet may I suggest you do NOT plug in your new system into the same outlet? Perhaps one on a different circuit (not on the same wiring as the first socket) Do you have a friend that is an electrician that can check your electric outlets?
BEFORE you buy a new motherboard MAKE SURE the processor is not dead TOO. Check to memory before too. IF your processor and board are dead - you may want to consider an upgrade (at least that is a perfect excuse - the old one died...) Note: usually either the processor and/or the memory usually dies with the motherboard (or can die rapidly after - on a new motherboard.) When the electrical surge has hit that deep into the system, there is no protection to the parts. With a surge protector and a decent (expensive) power supply, both will protect your system, but after that, there is no line of defense against electric shock.

Oh yeah, after you post there will be an "edit" button that shows up just under the right side of your post, so if you need to correct, you won't have to double post.

Here is the linkage for the A7N8X-E Deluxe... not sure where you are in the world, but you should be able to order it...?

I have the same exact motherboard and am having nothing but problems with it. So far I have replaced the cpu, and the PS. I am sending this mobo back to Asus for repair/replacement (this will be the 2nd time). Good luck on this one ... its under warranty send it back.

Hey guys

My journey through problems isnt over yet.. After i bought a new mobo,
i went back home and the problem just didnt end there! the new A7N8X
didnt work also!

I re-tested all the hardware in other pc, and guess what... CPU is DEAD!
My AMD Athlon Xp 2200+ is dead, not burned, just dead. dont know if is
some sort of electrical problem, but im replacing both (mobo+cpu) and upgrading
them.

HvyMtl - Its my last effort, this sh*tty problem is driving my crazy, and is costing
me a lot too!

Im thinking in a AMD Athlon 64BIT Skt754 2800+ but i still dont know what the
mobo should be...

Suggestions?

MG.

get a P4, there very easy to work with. only took me about 1hr to build my P4 system. and it booted up the 1st time without any problems. i used to have a FX-51, and the diff is amazing. i cant even tell the diff in games to.

Well, after almost 2 weeks without my machine (man I was almost dying here  ) I have it now working with a new CPU (Athlon Xp 2600+. Yes, it wasnt easy, but i found one, on sales here.) a new PSU (OCZ Powerstream 520w. Yup, the same, but a new one.), and my old mobo! Yep, it wasnt dead after all!! yayy!

Am now thinking in buying a good UPS, wich i recommend to everyone here, to avoyd
disasters like this again.

Keep on touch.

farewell

Mg.

Get the UPS, especially if your power is bad enough to kill off your system. I live in an apartment at the moment and when the vacuum cleaner goes on, the UPS beeps meaning there was enough drain for it to kick to battery for a microsecond. Effect on the PC...zero. I have all my PC related items on UPS systems.

Remember, a surge protector protects only aginst spikes in the power, it does nothing for the much more common and in some ways just as bad, brownouts, sudden drastic dips in voltage (see above) and current irregularites that can cause system freezes, data loss or possibly some damage to your PC. Just look for a good deal before plunking down $ for one (sale, rebate, specialty website etc). They last forever (batteries are replacable) and therefore save you money in the long run and protect against both ends of the power problem spectrum.
