Computer Associates Internet Security Suite -.01 AR

It uses Pest Patrol (spyware), Command software (AV) and Zone Alarm. No thanks.

ya sorry, my friend from radio shack showed me that and i thought somebody might be interested because it was free, but if it is no good then can it.

Pest Patrol is good software.

And screw software firewalls period. I don't care who makes them, they all suck. Good for the Pest Patrol and maybe the Anti Spam (never tried it though)

I got Pest Patrol thru a (supposed) full price rebate deal from newegg a while back and CA screwed me on the rebate so be aware when dealing with CA rebates. But PP is worth the price I paid(which wasn't that much to begin with) so not a really big deal. Honestly like others have indicated I would just find a deal on Pest Patrol stand alone and not risk losing 50 bucks for something you'll probably only end up using part of anyway.

There are definitely better software applications out there, but this isn't a bad package for the average user. Once you get it set up, it's pretty much automatic and needs no user interface. The price is right.....RoadRunner provides the suite for free to it's members.

Ok, I've never heard anything bad about Zonealarm before (not that I use it). What's wrong with it, or any other S/W firewall?

Most times, software like Norton Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm, and McAfee Firewall cause more problems than they solve. If you don't configure them properly they are an even bigger headache. I have had numerous personal expreinces where Norton or ZoneAlarm has gone haywire and killed the persons internet connection, or just starts blocking particular programs (this is also commonly attributed to users who don't know what they are doing, getting a popup from said firewall product about a particular piece of software or service trying to access the internet, and then proceeding to block it)

When these programs do go haywire, they are among the biggest pains in the ass to remove. I firmly believe in a good hardware firewall solution, even some of the run-o-the-mill linksys, smc, dlink routers have SPI and other features that are more than enough for the average user, and can be easily configured to keep certain people away from places you don't want them going.

Also, you make a file request or download something nasty, it has the potential to reconfigure the software firewall to its' liking, I have yet to see something do that to a hardware based solution.

Also just saw this the other day, which basically says the same thing I said with less detail, of course I don't clain to be a security boffin like the guy in the article.

I also look at it this way...if you are trying to penetrate a network, you can tell what security device you are dealing with sometimes by the way it responds to certain requests. Someone comes along, and through testing figures out he/she is hitting norton or zonealarm..guess what, they also know that they don't need to dig through multiple layers of security to get to a potential target, they know that they are dealing with a computer. Though when running a hardware firewall on the preimeter of your network, even though they may find out which security appliance it is, they don't know what's behind it. For all they know, i have another device sitting right behind it which would add another layer they would have to get through. I guess I am banking on the fact that there are more lazy script kiddies out there then highly motivated, intelligent hackers.
