Compter for firewall

what would be and ideal computer for a firewall? i have a 900Mhz HP but woulnt that be a bit much for a firewall

Ideal is whatever you have laying around, if 900mhz = free and anything else = cost, then guess which would youd choose? If you go for that you have a little headroom for things like mail/web/ftp server, and routing
 
that is true but i have been fiddling with suse on that computer and. its my spare comp if my main goes down.
 
Youd get away with something smaller, say ~200mhz, ppro if you can find it, but using it as a firewall doesnt mean you cant still have it as a spare rig, theres loads of ways round that, dual boot, knoppix, anything like that.

If you agree to fold on it, the hardfolding people might help you out with getting some older hardware. Heck, my school has about 10 p2 233's that arent in use... i can hook you up with a pentium 1 166 too, if you want it, and if that's enough.
 
how much would that 166 be and how much ram it got and ya i wouldnt mine folding on it at all also as i my net connection wasent slowed down which i dont think it would be

I use the following:
800mhz AMD
256mb PC133 ram
120gigs of drive space (ata133 pci card + motherboard)

Running Linux Mandrake 10
Operating as a:
Router + Firewall (Shorewall)
File server (Samba)
Webserver (apache/mysql/php/etc)
I call it "Supertux" :D

Had it for years through many many upgrades using leftover stuff from all my room mates. Works great, i've never had a problem with it.
I tried once to run Mandrake SNF 7.2 because of its GUI for all the router/firewall features, but could never get it to compile correctly.

Once you learn how shorewall works you can do some amazing things... like i have been playing around with traffic shaping and QoS packet scheduling for my VoIP, LAN, Tivo's, and WAN functions like http/ftp/ssh/etc..
