Component TV Out Problems

I've put together a media centre PC using the Windows 7 beta to output to my old Samsung widescreen CRT. The television claims to be 720p/1080i, but I have not used it with anything HD before.

I'm trying to output to it with an Asus EN8400GS and some component cables. It works fine at 480i or 480p, but at 720p (my desired resolution) I get a picture that's messed up enough that my TV gives up and shows me nothing. At 1080i I get a strange pattern of flickering horizontal lines (they do reflect the image being outputted to a certain extent, but it's not even remotely intelligible).

I've tried a couple sets of cables and both the latest Vista drivers and the beta Windows 7 drivers for the EN8400GS, but nothing makes any difference.

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this and what I could do to fix it?

What's the model of TV?

Can you try another source like an Xbox 360?

Does the TV support 720p? I have an older rear projection HD ready set, but it only supports 1080i. The problem is probably with the beta drivers. On my father's PC, using a 6600GT I had a problem using the S-Video output to show up on his TV. After I went back to an older driver version, I got it to work. The point is, sometimes it's just about finding the right drivers, and unfortunately Windows 7 is still just a beta.

EDIT: Let me clarify that on my father's PC, he's running XP.

Did you try going into the Nvidia Control Panel and going to the HDTV section and see what it gives you in terms of resolutions to set?
