My brother-in-law wants to connect his DVD player (with component and HDMI outputs) to a computer monitor (VGA). The monitor is a CRT and the highest resolution it supports is 1280x1024. Are there any cheap converters out there that will convert a component or HDMI signal to something the monitor can use via VGA? I searched around on monoprice since I was able to find a good component to HDMI converter for my 360 for cheap, but couldn't quite find anything with my bro-in-law's needs. Any help would be appreciated, thanks :)

Not really...

Google (well, Bing actually) turns up this. From the description, it should work. No idea how good the seller and manufacturer are. Also it's 25-30% of the price of a decent LCD you might find in the hot deals forum (by decent I mean better than a CRT with a max res of 1280x1024.)

A scalar box is about as cheap as you'll get, and it's important to note that there will definitely be a drop in picture quality during the scale-down from HDMI/Component to VGA. converting VGA to anything is pretty much a pain.

There has got to be something cheaper out there, which is why I came looking here after googling around. I recently bought THIS component to HDMI adapter, and it converts 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p component signals to HDMI perfectly (I use it with my Xbox 360 and 23" Acer 1920x1080p). I even tested the option of connecting the optical/toslink cable to the box, and it combines the image and digital audio into a true HDMI-compatible format. So, in essence it combines the component video signal AND the digital audio coming from the optical source together into a nice HDMI connection and works awesomely. That box was only around $40, and it converts an analog signal to a digital one. Component being converted to VGA should be even easier to do, at least in theory, right, seeing that it's analog to analog anyways?

He doesn't have an extra TV and will only be using the monitor with his DVD player to watch some kind of excercise videos and doesn't really care about the video quality - just so long as it's watchable enough to see the routines.

Thanks so far for the help!
