I was wondering what you guys use for component cables to go from dvd player or whatever to a tv. I was told that component cables give the best picture but from some sources i've seen online, they say there's no diff between rca cables and the fancy component cables. When i went to look at cables, the monster cables were $200!! that's insane!

so what do you guys use and is there actually a difference?

do not ever buy monster cables. not only are they overpriced and overhyped, the company has some questionalbe practices regarding it name branding. they sued just about anybody alive that has the word monster in it's name. Monset Garage, Monster.com, even a littel consignment shop in San Fran called Monster Closet. bastards.

I use Dayton brand cables from parts espress whenever I can. good quality, good price. I have heard good things about Blue Jean cables as well.
 
I've got some Monster brand cables...and I have some BB specials, and some RadioShack specials. For your average user I dont feel that the difference is that big of a deal as some grades of monster are very expensive. Personally, I would rather go DVI IF possible. If your theater components aren't what you'd call "high end" I wouldnt even stress about it.
This is just MY personal opinion though!

As far as using RCA cables...it will work, and it will still work better than composite. Use identical cables for each component though or you could end up with timing issues.
 
I use monster cables, but that is because I used to work at CC and they had an accomodations program with Monster. When I found out I was being laid off (due to them going non-com) I bought up everything I thought I might need for the forseeable future through the program. You can get Monster Series 3 Component cables for $80, which are overkill for most applications, and that is retail pricing, so, not sure where the $200 figure is coming from (unless it is some really long length).

Component does give you the best picture as far as analog connections go. Yes, you can use RCA cables, and it will work, but it is not the best solution. Ideally you want three video cables, an RCA tri-cable (the red, yellow, and white) is one video cable, and two audio cables. A video cable should ideally have a 75 ohm impedance, audio cables generally don't (the red and white). You could just buy three well shielded solidly constructed video cables (the yellow ones) for cheaper than the monster brand, and most likely get just as good of a picture.
