Is it possible to use Disk 1 and 2 (Raptor 36Gb) to make a RAID 0 array and then use another Raptor 76Gb (Disk 3) in a RAID 1 array that uses the 2 Raptor 36Gb's as one half of the set?
 
With about 75% confidence, I say NO

Just for kicks, are we talking hardware or software though
 
You might be able to, but i doubt it, it would depend alot on the controller card you were using I'd think. Short answer: Never saw a card that would do that.

With 3 disks, you can't do raid 0+1 which is what you are trying to accomplish.

The most you'll get is raid 5.. with 74 gb available space.

You should buy a secon raptor 74gb [not 76gb..]

Well it looks like I'm still going to have to make images of my RAID 0 array with DriveImage :(

I think I will do the 74Gb Raptor as my primary OS drive and use 3 36Gb Raptors in a RAID 5 array for my data. Which brings me to another question...is it really that advantageous to use the Raptors in a RAID 5 configuration? Or would it work just as well with 7200 RPM drives?

Well I have both the onboard RAID stuff (SI and Nvidia) and I also have a 4 port Promise RAID 5 card with 256mb of ECC.

So sort-of hardware and hardware. With Linux software raid, you can do this, and I considered doing it for a while. You can define one raid device that has the two raptors as members, and then another with the raid and the 74 as members.

Anyways, if that's what this is about, just ghost/whatever it on over. Raid1 is for longterm stuff, not a one-time copy operation.

The raptors will always be faster in any configuration than the same number of drives at 7200 rpm.
 
using my p2 (450) WinXP system

i put a pair of 6gb drives onto a promise raid controller
and put them into a raid 0 array (spaned)

then using windows software raid
made a raid 1 array using a 12gb HD

it works pretty well
its sorta pointless but its still neat to do
