Hello guys and gals. I am in a sticky situation, and I'm completely perplexed. I have built a new computer:

Asus Rampage II Extreme
Intel i7 920 D0 Processor
6Gb 1333MHz Triple Channel OCZ Gold Series (OCZ3G1333LV6GK)
Corsair HX 750W

I have had serious trouble installing Windows 7 onto the machine, crashing, BSOD, instability. So I decided to do a full format and clean install on a brand new hard drive my 'old' HP computer. Fine, it installed flawlessly and runs perfectly. Now, the problems start when transferring the hard drive to my new build. It turns on, everything is detected in the BIOS. It then begins to boot into Windows and gets to, "Windows is starting" and then a flash of a BSOD and the computer restarts. This happens every time, at the exact same place.
I have tried resitting the processor, changing the RAM positions and amount of RAM installed, tried different data cables. Thinking it might have been a bad processor or power supply, I have replaced them to no avail. I have tried changing the RAM timings and settings in the BIOS but this does not make a difference. Running Memtest reveals no errors with the RAM, and I'm completely puzzled to what this could be. I am ripping my hair out and feel like crying. :mad: Could the RAM still be the culprit even though Memtest comes back with 0 errors?

check your sata and ide configurations. I had to set one of my motherboards to IDE spec for the sata to work correctly.
 
I have set the SATA connection to all the available settings, IDE, RAID, ACHI. Same problem on all.
 
While I am not an expert, I got to say that installing an OS on another machine and trying to transfer it is IMO a big no no. I could be wrong, but I've never heard of this working out well.
As for your machine instability, well, that could be a lot of things. What do you have everything set too? Is your processor set at stock or did you try to OC right away? What are your voltages at? Did your bios set your memory timings correctly? I know you said you tried it with different amounts of memory, but did you try it with just one stick? I've seen memtest come back clean before and one of the sticks was still bad, so I don't put much faith in it. Could also try cutting your memory divider, perhaps running the memory way below spec could help you get through the install. I'm graspnig at straws here though...
 
Plus you shouldn't expect a Windows install from one system to work in another machine. It was sketchy to nil with XP. I'm not sure how Windows 7 would react in this type of situation.

Right, I will do a clean installation using the new computer and see if that resolves anything. I will get back to this thread later today. Thanks for the input so far.:)
 
Well, done a clean install and it now boots into Windows. Was a little unstable, several BSODs and crashes. So I took out the RAM and left one stick in, now it's running perfectly. Very stable and fast. I guess it was down to the cheap RAM I purchased. Once I sell the extra i7 920 I'm buying some Corsair Dominator RAM. Should have stuck with Corsair...

Thanks for your input guys! :D I'm one happy man (this computer business has been bugging me for 2 weeks, originally had a DOA Gigabyte UD5).
 
So you manually set the ram to 1333 and set the voltage of the ram to 1.65V? and set the timing to 9-9-9-20?

You should be good to go after this, and you don't need Dominator ram for stability.
 
Yes, I manually set the RAM to those settings (and adjusted a few others). But the system crashes when all 3 sticks are in. I'm running just one stick just now, and everything is smooth. So I presume either one or both the other sticks (that are not in the computer) are faulty, and that's what is causing the system to crash and hang.
 
Yep. Two out of the three sticks come back as faulty. :eek: Ah well, once I get some new RAM these are going back for a refund.
