Thanks for checking this out! I'm building a system and was just wanting to make sure I wasn't making any mistakes (please point them out if I have). I appreciate any advice or suggestions you might have!

2 Hitachi 250 SATA Drives
Saphire ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (until pci express takes hold and is more widely accepted)

Cooler Master CM Stacker MID-TOWER CASE
Antec 480W Power Supply "TRUE480"

I already have a Monitor, Optical Drives, Keyboard, Mouse, and various cooling elements.

I plan to use this computer for photoshop, gaming, web development, and standard computing (browsing, email, word processing etc.).

why?

also, is the ocz and epox a good match? I don't want to deal with mobo/mem issues

edit: Does my ram have to be ecc with the 3200+ and mobo combo?

No.
The socket 940 Athlon FX and Opteron chips need registered ECC. Socket 754 and 939 Athlon 64s use unbuffered non-ECC mem.

As for the 1 vs. 2 sticks, that's a socket 754 right? Might as well get one as long as the price difference isn't too big. It's like a $20 difference for registered ECC PC2700 like I've got in my rig. (Dual Athlon XP (modded), got the 2700 for more OC room vs. 2100)
 
I myself am looking to build a computer...

I would upgrade the video card to the GT or Pro if you have any cash left.....


the rest..ummm i would pick a diff case but tahts a personal pref

i'm holding off on a more $$$ vid card until pci express takes hold and really uses that extra bandwidth....

As for the case - i just want a nice looking (not blinged out) case that's fairly quiet and cool with plenty of room. I'm always open to suggestions!

If you are waiting then you should just wait to buy the rest...

You will have to buy a new CPU and Mobo when PCI-E comes out to get a PCI-E video card...well atleast a mobo lol.

please see above - i already have my optical drives. Don't you already have a running thread asking people to give you advice on your system?
 
Get one stick. The only reason you would need two is for dual channel, which the a64's don't support.

I am sorry, when i hear optical drives i dont automatically think DVD burner..I think DVD rom and cdrom

Hitachi doesnt have that great of a rep. In my opinion i would get a maxtor segate or wd.
But if ur getting a good deal on the Hitachi i would go for it. :)

The hitachi drives are some of the fastest if not the fastest 7200rpm SATA drives out there. I would get one in a heartbeat if I didn't already have 960GB's of space :rolleyes:

could someone humor me with an idea? what's the best thing going without spending the cash on an extreme edition chip?

Id add a good UPS or power conditioner however

depending on what your actually doing in photoshop
you may want to eventually get more RAM
(like if your dealing with large .tif or .raw files)
 
I'd say ditch the mobo and get a via K8T800 pro chipset option... faster hypertransport, more overclockable with many options.

I personally got an Abit KV8 Pro... It lacks firewire but has Gigiabit ethernet and all the rest of the goodies...
754 socket as well.

i will be. actually i'll probably be using photoshop more than gaming. That is why i was asking about p4 systems. HT might be more of an incentive for what I'll be doing. Besides, i'm just a casual gamer.
 
well a really large file and unlimited history or image wide changes just burn through RAM
and RAM is several orders faster access than the fastest HDD

setup multiple pagefiles for the virtual memory\scratchdisk

there are far greater advantages to having multiple HDDs given the indended use
(including cross booting [dual boot w\ dual ntldr & cross referenced boot.ini] for parallel recovery and repair, putting an ghost image of the other OS or critical data on the backend of each drive, ect)

graphics application performance, and data integrity \ recoverability outweighing the added gaming advantages
