Competitors to the A95

I've been shopping for a high quality digital camera (for snapshots) and have pretty much narrowed it down to the Canon A95. Besides its numerous manual settings and excellent photo quality, it uses Compact Flash which is a huge selling point for me as I already have quite a bit of it lying around.

Are there any other cameras I should be considering? Keep in mind that the A95 can be found for under $300 at several reputable retailers ( I'm trying to stay around that price point).

Any recommendations or considerations would be very much appreciated.

Nikon 4300/4800 possibly? I don't know the A95 is pretty damn good for it's price...

Yes, that's almost identical, to the A95. However, he did specifically say that CF support is a "huge selling point", and alas, Sony stuck to MemoryStick for the DSC-W1.
Why the hell won't Sony drop fucking MemoryStick media? It's what puts me off them, every time. There's too much competition in the memory card field. :(

KevC: aren't those Nikons (especially the 4800) A) More expensive than the A95, and B) of less resolution (4.3 and 4.8 versus 5.0MP)?

ah. Missed that point :p

Thanks for the replies. The one thing I like about the Sony is the large LCD display it has but that pro doesn't outweight the con of it using Memory Sticks in my book.

It looks like Canon will be getting another customer!

Thanks again!

Not only that, but IIRC, the Sony's in question don't offer manual control -- which the A95 has).

As I posted in another thread, I've just recently purchased an A95, and so far I really like it -- although noise is definately an issue at ISO 200 (didn't really notice how much noise appeared at this ISO setting until I downloaded some pics to my computer). Sure there are programs like NeatImage to help clean that up, but I haven't gotten around to trying it out yet with this digicam.

I'm using a 1GB Sandisk Extreme memory card, and performance is definately snappy -- three seconds or so to save a Superfine 5-megapixel image is not too bad.

In the next couple of days, I'll take some indoor/outdoor/macro pics to share with you guys.

 I never said the Sony was better than the A95 so STFU.

You implied image quality would be comparable when you mentioned the Sony in the first place. Phalanx was asking if there are any other cameras to consider, and you replied with the Sony. That means (in your opinion) the Sony is a good competitor to the Canon.

How about saying WHY you recommend the Sony.

He asked if there were other cameras to consider within the range of 300 dollars and I said the Sony W1 is an alternative to the A95. Both cameras are basically the same and the Carl Zeiss lens is a nice touch to it. I said NOTHING about image quality. So don't try to force your opinion onto me.
The A95 image quality leagues beyond the W1? Show some proof.

Indeed. I'm neutral here as I'm looking to get one of these two cameras myself.

Well, its a done deal. The A95 has been ordered along with a 2GB CF card. I know I said I had plenty of memory but now I have plenty +2GB! I took a more serious look at the Sony and directly compared it to the Canon and nearly every advantage fell to the Canon. I cant wait until it comes!

WOW! and here I thought my 1GB card held a lot of pics. :)

my friend recently picked one of these up for a christmas present for his wife, we looked inside the box before wrapping it up and I noticed that there wasn't a power supply and that it comes with alkaline batteries... I wasn't sure if there was suppose to be a power supply in there or not any info on this?

i love my sony V1, and i'm sure the w1 is just as good, but the v1 has a couple better manual settings
