hey guys, my friend just bought a cd player, radio, cassette player, and receiver but he wants to know if the receiver and speakers are compatible...i dont know much about speakers and receivers so help is really appreciated guys

No they are not compatible.

The speakers have a built in amplifier.
The receiver is (among other things) a speaker amplifier.
Can you guess what will happen when you connect amplified speakers to a speaker amplifier?

Yea there are a few 2.1 systems out there but they are exactly a good value.
An example is the Cambridge SoundWorks

I think you are better off buying seperate components to get a 2.1 system.
For instance the Polk Audio R15 Black
Two-Way Bookshelf speakers:

would be a nice budget setup with that receiver.

For $100 you'd be better off with a pair of bookshelf speakers that don't include a subwoofer. A $50 subwoofer probably wouldn't hit as low as a decent pair of bookshelves anyway, so your friend would be better off getting something like these Rocket ELT's. I promise you they will be louder, clearer, and deeper than any $50 speakers paired with a $50 sub.
