comparing the E4500 and the e6550

Is the jump from the e4500 to the e6550 really worth the $40? I have a coolermaster hyper TX2 here that's still in the package, if that makes a difference..
 
IMHO, the E6550 might not be worth the extra $40 over the E4500, when it comes to real-world performance alone at stock CPU speeds. The E6550 isn't priced much lower than the higher-model E6750 (about $15-$20 difference), making the E6750 a better value than the E6550 right now. While between the E4500 and the E6750, it's a toss-up as to which of those two CPUs is the better value (with roughly the same amount of real-world performance per dollar).
 
What do you plan on doing with this system?

The extra L2 cache only helps for some things, like video encoding. It won't matter much for most games.

The E4500 is only $120 at mwave.com, and only $100 at microcenter. I'd go with the E4500 instead, and pickup a quad core later. What board will you be using?
 
This will be purely a gaming machine, and i will probably be purchasing http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16813128059 this board.

That board, like other P35-based motherboards, will allow you to upgrade to current and future quad-core processors for the next couple of years. And I still stand by my view that the E6550 isn't worth the extra $40 over the E4500, as performance on CPU-limited games is affected almost entirely by the raw processor clock speed (and the FSB bandwidth and L2 cache amount have little, if any, impact). In fact, if you're going to spend $150 to $200 on a processor, why stop at E6550 when just a few dollars more buys you better?
