Comparing Old Video Cards to new..

Let me confess. I'm cheap...Well, poor too. I'm trying to squeeze every last bit out of my Athlon XP system, which is running a 2400+ and a gig of memory. I have a 9700 Pro in it right now, and it seems fine. I've skipped, oh, about three generations of video cards, since the games have been playing fine.

What I never see is comparisons between different generations of video cards. For example, is my 9700 Pro better than a 700 Pro, or a 6600GT, or a 6200Gt, for example. In general, newer cards are better, as older cards get phased out. But this isn't normally true in the value and mid-range (Geforce 4mx and 9500 Pro come to mind, for opposite reasons) I've seen the Tom's and Adrians Ropjak Pot charts, but they only mention specs, not perfomance.

For example, if nothing else in my system changes, is a 128mb 6600GT better, worse, or the same as my 9700 pro?

I'd say the 6600GT may be a bit better, but since you're 'cheap' (I am too!) I don't know if you would say it's money well spent...also consider that you are on AGP, and most new cards won't be available on AGP.

The 6600gt is better as it is the "newer" of the two. The 9700 Pro was up against nVidia's GeForce 5**** series which was a total flop. The new 6**** series are leaps and bounds ahead of the old tech.

Theres nothing wrong with being cheap my friend...unless we're talking about hookers.... :D

Simply put newer cards work better with more Cpu power. it seems that from what i can tell the 6600 gt's and the 6800 gs's are right around the same performace with no aa/af. Will that provide a massive speed boost, Im gonna guess not. it will provide some increase in fps but with the aging sub systems and feeding more and more data to the gpu your cpu is gonna start bottlenecking you rather quickly.

Being cheap on hardware is a blessing, I know one guy that only in the last year replaced a 1 ghz p3....

my 2 cents

6600GT is NOT about equal to a 6800GS- even the 6800NU was marginally ahead of the 6600GT, and the 6800GS is about equal to a 6800GT. (Wow, that's a confusing string of numbers!)

OP:
You have to fill in some blanks yourself. For example:
6600GT is a bit better than 9800XT.
9800XT is a bit better than 9800 Pro.
9800 Pro " " " " " 9800.
9800 is about equal to 9700 Pro, a bit faster in AA/AQ modes.

In brief:
66GT>98XT>98P>98>=97P
