Compareable intel to 3200+ venice.

Hey guys i've got everything for my computer except for the CPU and mobo. I'm going to be using a HIS x800xl VC. I'm almost totally sure i'm going with the 3200+ venice but I never really looked at the intels too much. Computer is going to be used for mostly gaming and some for business school, which doesnt have many cpu draining programs except maybe for photoshop. Anyways I was just about to go ahead and order a 3200+ AMD venice for 190$ retail at the egg. I figured i'd drop by in here and see what the intel gurus have to say. I've seen so many different sockets and numbers with the p4's that i dont really understand them. What it all boils down to is there anything that can compete with a 3200+venice in that price range or maybe up to 50dollars more. What is this going to give me over the venice. The HT technology sounds really cool but I dont really multitask much so I dont know if there is too much of a point. In maybe a year or two i'd like to switch my proc. out for a dual core or possibly just something better so i need the mobo to be able to accept upcoming sockets. Just trying to see what intel has to offer when paired up against a 3200+venice. Thanks guys. Please dont let this turn into a flame war.

530J Prescott OC'ed for $173 im guessing

or maybe the 505 Presscott (533mhz FSB but supposidly almost all of them can oc to 800mhz FSB and hit 4ghz from its stock 2.66) for $129.99

or the P4 630 if you want 64bit for $219.99 which can also hit 4ghz.

OCed 3200+ will still perform better in most games though when OCed. Intel has the hyperthreading.

I am actually making the same decission as you are, between the 3200+ Venice and these Intel CPUs.

I mean, I only run small apps when I play games like Trillian, DC++ and Azureus if that. So I might not benefit from hyperthreading until I burn something and want to browse the web at the same time (which is only a few times a month)

A Pentium 650 would balance a Venice in game performance and beat it considerably in mostly everything else.

Right now the 650 costs about twice as much as the Venice would. However, Anandtech stated in a recent article that all 6xx processors will be undergoing a "dramatic" price cut sometime in August; so the 650 will probably be at least comparable to the veince 3200+ in price sometime soon.

The roadmap also reveals that the prices of the 6xx line will cut dramatically mid-August, and VT enabled Prescott 2M (Pentium 4 672 and Pentium 4 662) will retain a premium over their non-VT counterparts.

For your own knowledge, the 650 is a 64-bit compatible processor with 2MB or L2 cache. It has hyperthreading support and is built for the "Land Grid Array 775" socket (which means that the pins are on the mobo instead of the CPU). It has a clock frequency of 3.40Ghz and uses a FSB of 800Mhz (effective).

IMO, this processor is much better than any of AMD's offerings.

Going from what big said how would this compare? Anyone have any benchmarks in games and other things. Does it have HT, I dont think it does.

Did you not see the part of my post mentioning the upcomming "dramatic" price cut?

Dramatic=huge drop in price so within two weeks the 650 probably won't cost much more than a venice 3200+.

The 630 that you linked isn't a bad CPU either (basically just a downclocked 650). But it would more likely parallel the Athlon64 2800+ in gaming (at least according Anandtech's framerate charts). If you want an Intel CPU that performs dead on par with a Venice 3200+ than you need a 650 or a 560J (but I'm not sure if the 5xx series will be getting a price cut, however).

waiting a couple of weeks for the 650 to drop in price is your best bet, IMO.

Yeah i saw the part about the pricecut, I just dont have the time to wait.
I doubt that the 630 performs too much worse than the 3200+ venice. It just doesnt seem worth it to me to wait for the pricecut. Who knows how long it could be for one and also how much they would even cut it. I'd rather not wait because i'm going to school fairly soon. Thankyou for your advice, maybe i'll decide on an intel the next time around.
