Compaq Touchpad Issue

I have a Compaq 900 series with a Synaptics touchpad, it's about 2 years old. The problem is the touchpad quits working randomly. The only solution I have found for it is to uninstall the touchpad from the device manager and keep rebooting until Windows finds it; which sometimes can take as many as 10 reboots.
Also, when it quits working, it only shows up in the device manager under hidden devices.I have made sure that all of the drivers are current.
What do you think, hardware or software issue? And any fixes? Thanks.

Searching across google People running Linux are having the same problem, it appears to be hardware related.
