Compaq laptop screen goes black

Hey guys, my wife has a Compaq Presario C700 laptop. It has a 1.73 GHz Pentium Dual Core T2370 processor in it and 2.5 Gigs of Ram. It uses the Intel 965 Express chipset. Every so often, her screen goes blank and does not turn back on. She has to shut down and restart it. This problem has now progressed to it happening everyday. The Laptop is 2 years old roughly. I think the issue has something to do with the chipset overheating, but not really sure how to remedy the situation since it's a laptop. Any Ideas on how to troubleshoot and fix this problem? Let me know if you guys need anymore info.
 
First thing I'd want to test:

If you plug an external monitor in - does anything display on the external monitor?
 
Well it happens randomly, so I'll have to wait for it to actually happen when I'm around. But I'll let ya know when I get the chance.
